I have just been to slimming group yesterday and found out I put on a lot of the weight I had lost over the last few months.

The new house being a building site has not helped and my making the builder a couple of filled white rolls then having some myself has helped even less. I have ordered the ten day wheat detox from the same author and will start to use it as not only am I fat but my knees are starting to ache etc and I do not want to be like this.

The kitchen is being demolished next week and replaced so I should eventually have a nice working kitchen with storage so I can get back to cooking from scratch and replenish stores etc. Just hope I can dig out my Remoska from the cardboard boxes so I can still cook something healthy.

Elona - I've had the same problem for the last few weeks. At the start of the process I was OK, but as they've taken over more and more of the house, eating properly has been a problem. Luckily neighbours have taken pity on me and fed me/given me food.

In other news... the heating is back on.

The builders are starting to feel the pressure of the deadline though. I've told them I don't care how late they work, the job needs to be finished today.

You are a lot more decisive than me. I am just trying to go with the flow or I will be a whimpering heap ;)

My builders are being quite protective of me, bless them. I got a quote for carpets and the builder realised it was a rip off so warned me. ( He has no axe to grind by the way as it was a private carpet fitter).

My youngest daughter comes down for the weekend tonight so I will be cooking for five of us. Might make a cottage pie as that should not spoil if they are late. I realised my Remoska was not only in a box but far too big for just me so have ordered a small multi cooker so I can make omelettes, stir fry type meals etc.

I am not looking forward to the disruption but it will be worth it in the end as not only will I have a nice spacious kitchen diner with a breakfast bar but will have more storage as well as making sure the plumbing and electrics are safe. Previous owner seems to have done or bodged a lot of stuff himself

I hope you get everything to your liking and get a chance to relax and enjoy the improvements.

Elona - much of this has worked because I haven't decided on the detail until we get to the point a decision is needed. This means that we're working with what's possible, not trying to achieve some idea. And it has worked. The landing, which really wasn't the point of this, has had to be redone because of the change to the stairs and moving all the pipework/electrics under the floor to be accessible, is looking stunning. I have bookshelves instead of twiddly spindles that are a PITA to paint and dust. And I have space and light.

No carpets ... just painted and varnished floorboards.

The builder finds all the trades for the stuff he can't do himself. He discusses options and costs.

I'd suggest doing some batch cooking before your kitchen is ripped out so you have stuff you can just heat up when things are at their worst.

The main reason for me doing all this work was also to get rid of the DIY and bodged/poor quality work. I feel a LOT happier now I know the infrastructure is safe.

The weekend will be spent cleaning, tidying and taming the garden. Next week I have family staying so we'll be rearranging furniture and deciding where pictures and shelves need to go!

Crikey, you ladies are gluttons for punishment. I can't stand having builders in the house. What state are your toilets in? :(

My builders are house trained thank you :)

They'll be coming back in around November to make a start on downstairs. I need a kitchen of sorts sometime before Christmas.
  • A totally fruitless (well flourless) trip to W8rose today where they had no brown rice flour, gram flour, potato flour, polenta, maize flour, soya flour or rye flour so plans thwarted until I can get into the city and go to the vegan wholefood shop where they routinely stock all of these and many more too including tapioca flour and chestnut flour. I did however find a very nice gluten free book in the library which has recipes for a pizza base and a gooey chocolate cake, potato gnocchi using rice flour and different types of pastry so my trip wasn't entirely wasted :D.

Did you ask them why they didn't have it Lyn? I'm sure mine does.

There's a REALLY good shop in Petersfield if you're over that way. It's like a wholefood supermarket!
  • Rice Up Wholefoods in Southampton is the vegan wholefood shop I go to, they are an Aladdins Cave of ingredients and such a wide range of products. Best place I've found for 'loose' herbs and spices, also loose herb and fruit teas and they do 'scoop' pulses, nuts, cereals, dried fruits etc. If you're ever over that way it's on the road that goes down from just above the Bargate towards Debenhams, well worth a visit but take plenty of cash!!!

Thanks, MrsLW, DS3 will be back there from September doing his MA so I'll be investigating that one! In the meantime, International Foods in Portswood Rd. is another Aladdin's Cave of interesting & exotic ingredients at reasonable prices. Luckily one of my nieces lives in Portswood...
