I wanted to share a selection of beans and rice recipes for using some of your stocks.

Fiesta Black Beans and Rice and Baked Lentils and Brown Rice both look particularly tasty and healthy when cash and resources are low.

That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

We have a Wing Yip (Chinese supermarket/catering supplier) not too far away which is good for large quantities of vinegar, also bicarb of soda in big packs, catering sized bottles of soy sauce and herbs and spices. Unlike a lot of these places it's on a convenient bus route for us

Sometimes you'll find the big jugs of vinegar at the local markets
There are no local markets near me :cry::cry: The closest is a train journey away, £2.30 counting my Senior Raicard discount :D I'd have to buy a lot to make that up, but they do have a Lidl as well :j
It's also a good time to get squash and sacks of potatoes - if you keep them cool and dark (I use a spare kitchen cupboard away from the cooker) and ensure they're stacked to allow airflow both potatoes and squash can be kept for a couple of years.
Ooh, now, that sounds promising, thanks. I'm rejigging my use of the whole house over the next six months, as I get rid of work stuff, so a cool dark space will certainly become available later in the year :j
Years love, I use lots in the autumn making pickles and chutneys but usually have at least 2 x new 5 litre packs upstairs in store, it just rolls over from one pickling season to the next and in the winter I just top up my shaker bottle when it needs it, like cheese, bacon soap etc. vinegar is one of the old fashioned commodities that is made to keep as long as it has to.
Another question from me :o does vinegar ever run out of puff? I mean, when I've eaten all the shop-bought pickled onions, there's a lot of vinegar left - can that still be used for various stuff?

Bus (and train) routes are crucial for me too. Thats why the possibilities of the trip today to the farm shop were so exciting, its well off any public transport. Unfortunately, that ensured that it wasn't any good for the likes of me :D it was almost like a deli.

:o When my hair was long (well, just below shoulder-length) I used to use ex-picked-onion vinegar as a conditioning rinse. Cupful per basin of cool water. Brought my hair up luvverly and no need for conditioner.

Now my hair is short, I don't bother, but I will have a coffee jarful of such vinegar when I've finished the h.m pickled onions, so wouldn't mind any bright ideas about what to do with it.

Aha! You could combine it with baking soda in the sink plughole to make a great frothy drain-cleaner (safety note, never combine these two substances prior to putting them -separately!- down the plughole).

We have a a Wing Yip near us too Maryb, also on a main bus route (219 bus). Wonder if it's the same one. It's very useful for all sorts of things :)

MILA - we store tinned, pickled and preserved foods from the allotments, jams, jellies and honey. I also stockpile pasta and rice but we're short of space so I'm limited to what fits into the pantry: which is really only enough for 4-6 months. I have buckets of wholemeal and plain flour but no sugar as we have more than enough honey so I don't buy sugar at all. We store sacks of potatoes and onion strings and garlic plaits in a cool dry shed; and apples in stacking trays there as well. We store toilet rolls and toothpaste, soap and shampoo In a the front bedroom - I chuck a crocheted blanket over it the huge plastic containers in there when we have visitors - but I'm careful about rotating things. I don't store much water though, mainly because there's a spring on the allotment which could supply drinking water if necessary (the quality has been tested and is fine) so only have one case of bottled water here.

Thanks for those, NewShadow; we've been trying Ful Medames in the slow cooker this weekend, which is along the same lines but sounds more exotic! More ideas for DD2 there...
