the threat could even come from officialdom who could outlaw hoarding

I don't think it's classed as hoarding, if you had the stock, before the emergency arose.

    I'm considering one of these:

Though I assume the handsome gentleman doesn't come with it :p

I used to have one, but my ex kept it when we split.

Runs very effectively on twigs (actual twigs - smaller than pencils) or, if there's no wood, a single paraffin firelighter or hexamine tablet is enough to boil the kettle full of water (c.2lt) in about the same time as an electric kettle.

I'm shopping around as they've gone up in price a tad since the last one I bought...£60 is the cheapest I've seen
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I think the concern would be during an emergency, if you built your stores up in advance, and the gov of the day ordered stocks be relinquished.

If you resisted/refused/hid stocks you could then be in serious trouble.

Or even not the gov - if your neighbours decided to attack because you were sitting on what they wanted - decent people can talk each other into horrible things that wouldn't be contemplated during easier times.

Remember, it only took two days during the Stanford prison experiment for tensions to rise - and everyone their knew it would all be over in two weeks. It was called off after 6 days.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

There's a few cheaper ones, available from Amazon.

I have been gifted a large glass butter churn :j

It looks like a large old fashioned jar that sweeties used to come in.
On the side, embossed into the glass it says
    "Blow Butter Churn 3/30"
The handle is on the lid (all metal)and it has airholes in the lid as well.
The three paddles going down into the jar are wooden and do not disconnect from the rod coming down from the lid.

I can clean and sterilise the jar ok but how would you suggest cleaning the wooden paddles and metal bits of the lid?

Thanks in anticipation of helpful suggestions :)

We could go a couple of months on stocks. I'm trying to build up reserves a little more as Mr.D's job finishes in December. Not worrying too much as he has been "approached" by other companies. I will breathe easy when he has signed on the dotted line with one of them.

Hope you're settling into your flat Frugalsod.

    Daz - how's your Dad.

GQ - don't overdo it on the lottie please :)
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p

Yes you can find cheaper if you are looking around and willing to accept used. I opted to get direct as they had a lot of accessories available and the one off postage made sense to get it all at once and direct. Plus they occasionally have deals. I got an old style riveted Trekker model when they switched over to the welded version. In the end I got Base camp and Trekker versions both with hobo stoves and trivets.

Re MP/ government wages.. If they done their job properly then yes they deserve a good wage/ bonus etc. BUT if they are crap and not sticking to targets they should be sacked. But there was a petition of a vote of no confidence in David Cameron a few months back, there was enough signatures for itvto be debated etc. But the response was they wouldn't debate or consider it, as it has never been done before!!!!

I think there should be some sort of clause or whatever, when a party is elected into government for a 4 year term. There should be a system put into place either that the policies they have put into place if a % of them miss targets etc this will automatically generate a general vote by the public to see if they want the present government to carry on, or to be outed .. A cabinet member etc.. Hope that made sense.

If all food supplies stopped and I only had what I got stored.. Prob 2-3 weeks at a push.. As I am trying to watch the pennies at the moment. So that was a good question to bring up. As it has brought it back into my thoughts again .

As for pet food prob a week. Loo rolls a few days.

Tea bags about a month, but they will be no good without milk and sugar..

( you have just prompted me to do a farmfood shop later.. Lol)

I would look into ways of steam sterilising them. Metal parts could be boiled as well. Milton solution might also be an option.

    Good luck with that.

I have moved around 80% in already, need to work out new places to store things, as the kitchen has no storage but I now have a small room that I will be using as a pantry, and have already moved my food drums in there.

This one appears to be new.

And all sold by the Kelly Kettle Company.

I think Frug was talking about the adapters and bits to let you cook with it - Most of the pan/trivet sets cost £20 odd.

Thank you for the links though.
