I've just seen pictures on FB from friends in DC and New York. Luckily the snow missed Canada, so I shouldn't be getting stuck in any airports next week! I do have warm clothes though - I packed for extreme weather.0

What if, just before the experiment reaches its conclusion, the earth is demolished, to make way for a hyperspace bypass.Unfortunately, my employer filed the plans in the basement lavatory of the Planning Directorate, in a locked cubicle, behind a sign Beware of The Large Carnivorous Cat.
As no one objected within the appeal period, the hyperspace bypass will be going ahead just as soon as someone can secure an adequate supply of cones.
It's your own fault for not paying attention to what was going on in your own galactic neighbourhood, and Customer Services have been instructed to laugh like (blocked) drains at any whingeing from The Public.thriftwizard wrote: »The mice will be furious...Not as cross as the rats are; I interrupted a fellow plotholder all tooled up for raticide on the communal muckheap. Today has been very warm and gloriously sunny and the blackthorn flowers have started to come out and the birdies are singing fit to burst. Positively spring-like.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Nice to meet a fellow BBT fan.
How do you feel about old Smelly Pooper finally getting laid?0 -
I think that if I called social services in preparation for a situation that may or not happen I would be given short shrift and guided to the emergency line should a problem occur... of course that would be too late.
The out of hours team need to asses the risk to the vulnerable adult, all of which takes hours to sort for just one person. In theory, yeah, but I can't see how it would work in practise with multiple vulnerable people.
There's also the private customers. They rarely have any input with social services. Would they qualify equally in an emergency situation? I really don't know.0 -

I know the practise is going to be substantially different to the theory (and that will vary even more depending on how each Local Authority has implemented budget cuts).
I know how difficult and time consuming it can be for a social worker to find one emergency bed - Herself being a social worker - the chances of finding several hundred and then arranging transportation at a time when those services are seriously stretched due to the same conditions that have caused the issue - the media will have a field day during the aftermath and the politicians will blame freak conditions. (And that would be that, apart from empty promises, until the next time).0 -
It's definately worrying isn't it?
I would often comment on how those that were under the care of social services were in a much better position than those who paid for their care privately due to means testing. I would call issues in or the manager would put a case together for what the vulnerable person needs and a case would be put in place to get the piece of kit or access to the services needed. It took time but there was always light at the end of the tunnel.
Trying to get access or commitment to pay for services or equipment to those that pay for care themselves is so difficult. When you're dealing with vulnerabilities and that person has the final say, ot's worrying and very frustrating.
Hats off to Herself for being a social worker. Their work load must be constantly immense.
The whole issue is so conflicting. I mean just look at my comments above and I know that its never ideal to rely on outside help.0 -
I have the gear and the expertise to walk 8 miles in blizzard conditions, but its not something I'd particularly recommend and frankly I wouldn't be likely to do it for work - I did that was I was young and stupid, but that was 30+ years ago, I'm no longer young0

There's a flaw in your assumptions. Modern business practise has moved from stockholding to a Just In Time model. Those bars and restaurants will rely on daily or several times daily deliveries. The increased numbers of people within the airport will deplete supplies faster.
Checked luggage may well be returned to passengers, as airlines will try to find hotel accommodation.
Assuming no disruption to mains services you are correct regarding power and toilets. Spare clothing will provide insulation, perhaps not as tidily as a sleeping bag, but some people will be more adaptable and prepared than others - some will find it difficult (some find an airport and flying stressful enough when everything goes smoothly)
Not necessarily. If people are transferred to hotels then the supply issues will not be material. If they have their bags then they will be even better able to cope. While there would be an issue with passengers getting to the US eastern seaboard there would also be a drop off in the numbers of passengers from there as well. These might offset enough to make no overall difference in food demand. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
