  • Also, in an EOTWAWKI situation (ie. no working Governments), precious metals will have no real value, except to those requiring them, for mechanical purposes, eg. as electrical conductors.

Very true. I would think that more practical items would be more valuable. Fabric and wools to make clothes. Corrugated steel for shelters. Cable of any kind to rebuild electrical grids no matter how small. Jars for storage and detergents for cleaning and health maintenance. Even water and water filters if things were really dire. The things that most of us are trying to accumulate on a small scale. All are more useful than gold or silver.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

Did you guys read about the Nazi gold train recently?

Presumably they were intending to go and unearth the train after the war, and so get to keep 'their' gold. Wasn't it was rather poetic justice that the part of Germany they stashed it, ended up being part of Poland? :)

I wonder if the UK has been silly enough to stash any of the country's gold in Wales or Scotland. (No offence guys. Just thinking about devolution.) I think we have some in America, don't we, which seems a bit daft?

My rellies in Zimbabwe were very adept at getting their money out of the country before they left - almost all of them were self employed in various fields, and they'd do things like having people pay them abroad for services they were providing in Zim. It does mean that you need many people with bank accounts in more than one country, of course!

None taken:rotfl:. But people might be required to learn every type of Welsh there is to ask for it back again dependant on which particular mountain its hidden under - now there's South Welsh, North Welsh, Wenglish and I think there might be a couple of other versions as well....

Part of the reason for thinking "Darn this - I thought it was just one language I was learning" and giving up the whole idea and deciding to just stick to the language everyone has in common (at least I'm "The Guardian" level of fluent in this one....).

Looks like winter is on the way. :(
