and checking and drilling the family on emergency escape routes out of the hotel - including making sure that the fire doors would open.
I check out the location of the fire exits, immediately I arrive at my room.
Likewise, I establish the location of emergency exits on all vehicles I travel on, and, if given a choice, I seat myself as close as possible, to an exit.0 -
Thanks GreyQueen, a list of what needs to go in the bag and where the various things are sounds an ideal solution for me. Just need to make sure everyone knows where the list is, of course0

Stick it on the fridge door - visitors might think you're eccentric but at least no one will be able to miss it.

Joking apart, I imagine it would actually work, as note paper.0 -
Frugalsod, you might have laughed today when one of my young customers, a fashion student, came across a reel of surgical thread amongst the Sylkos. "What's this for?" she asked. Thinking fast, I assured her it'd come in useful in case of a zombie apocalypse. She bought it...Angie - GC Sept 25: £226.44/£450: 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 28/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

While no computer is ideal, in a SHTF situation, I think my Hudl is a better option than most.
Its good points include:-
Light weight - just 663g (23.4 oz), including leather case.
Compact - 33.3cm x 13.5cm x 2.3cm, including case.
Built in Wireless capability, allowing easy access to available WiFi hotspots.
Built in cameras - 1.2 MP webcam and 5MP rear.
Being a tablet, rather than a laptop, it can be used on the move, including while walking.
Massive range of apps, including maps, GPS, and language translators.
Charges from USB socket, so can be charged from mains, cigarette lighter socket, jumper pack, pocket solar charger, etc.0 -

I would add that they are also very cheap to run. My iPad only uses 10W of power and that could be recharged with a solar panel and a battery pack.
Also if you switch to using a tablet for watching your TV you could save a lot of electricity watching TV this way rather than through a conventional TV. A large screen TV could use as much as 200W or even a modern efficient LED TV could still use 40W per hour. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Today I picked up a computer virus that locked my browser. One of those fake police ones that asks you to pay a fine for watching kiddie !!!!!!. (I hadn't been.)
Never mind, I thought. I have a spare hard disk in the drawer for just this occasion. I cloned it onto my c: drive and then tried to restore my emails & documents from Mozy for the last few weeks since I did my backup, exactly as I did last year.
Grrr! Mozy restore manager will no longer let you download just the files that are different. You have to download every file you ever had. It's going to take about a day just to download. (It seems to download at the speed of dialup internet.)
Anyone found a reliable cloud backup that doesn't cost meggabucks?0
