We'd die of starvation here in London, well except the preppers here of course2cm of snow and everything stops working and grinds to a halt.

Hi all, I have just discovered this thread and managed to get to page 31, i will continue reading with great interest tomorrow!there have been loads of fabulous tips and suggestions! . I thought i was a bit special for having an emergency rucksack by the front door until i spoke to my sister who also admitted to having a similar set up. I think my reinterest has coincided witht he third season of the walking dead! today i have re packed my emergency car bag, and made a list of supplies i need to replenish. In my car bag i have - full change of clothes for my 1 yr old son + nappies wipes calpol food and bottled water, for me i have spare undies socks a thick jumper bottled water paracetamol a spare inhaler soap shampoo and conditioner hair samples, tea coffee sugar, a walkie talkie spare mobile, money. In my car i also have snow boots and a waterproof picnic blanket. I also have a wind up torch that charges things (multi adaptor for all phones) and has a radio too. also a road atlas. My emergency bag in doors is more a survival camping bag, sleeping bag spare clothes, full wash bag towel camping saucepan plates lighter solid fuel stove headtorch etc. I also have an emergency cupboard in the house with a months worth of food, this i am constantly adding to to ensure i have enough for my family. I have been thinking about the protein front and thought pickled eggs are the way forward as we have chickens and a surplus of eggs seems like a plan. I need to learn some skills tho, we have the food for free book and are pretty handy but i wouldnt know how to catch rabbits etc. We also have an air pistol and Dh is trying to convince me we need a crossbow. I had a dream we had a tsunami, ( i live 5 mins from the sea ) and i think that is a serious issue (flooding) Also i had a real emergency situation a couple of months back, the main electricity cable went outside our house and caused the pavement to vibrate and smoke (cable arcing underground) we had to evacuate our house immediately and werent allowed back in for many hours (hence the car bag!) this has now happened 3 times as the cable shorts out further down the street and is gradually being repaired, the last time it happened they dug up our drive trying to locate the cable and managed to rupture the water pipe and the mains gas. That was a very long cold and uncomfortable night despite having provisions in place. We had to stay up til six in the morning because the electricity and gas people were in and out all night long to test inside the house. Sorry bit of an essay but you never know when the power will go and how long it will last, I suggest in your emergency list of phone numbers you add the gas water and electric companies.0

They look amazing but terrifying as well. Stay safe 2T.
I remember in the 80s, when it was cold in the UK and we had no heating upstairs in my parents house, I'd wear a bobble hat and mittens in bed as well as socks and pjs. It would have been colder then than when the house was built in the 1880s as the open fires would have all been in use so there would have been heat coming up the chimney stack and warming the top rooms (servants' quarters, I think!).
But by the mid 80s (looking it up, I think it would have been 1984/5 I'm thinking of) the open fires downstairs had been converted to gas fires and the open fires in the bedrooms on the first floor weren't in use. Downstairs was warm enough with the gas fires, but not upstairs! Mum did buy some electric heaters for the bedrooms after that, but gosh, they'd have used some electricity!
Dawemouse, welcome to the thread, and a very good point about the emergency phone numbers for the utilities! Do you have to give them your customer number when you contact them, or is the address enough?0 -
morning all I am in the office already and the heating isnt on
the aircon is on and broken so whistling like a boiling kettle and one of the lights is flickering and making a pinging sound. I am so glad I've got no distractions to keep me from doing my work *rolls eyes*
welcome aboard dawemouse, sorry you've had a rough few months but so pleased it's meant you have been able to put things in place now to make things a little more comfortable for any future dramas. Pop a couple of snax in the car too just in case you need a bit of extra energy. Loving the idea of the pickled eggs!!!
have a good day everyone - out playing tonight so not sure if I'll be on again today or not - may pop on at lunchtime
bye for now!Blah0 -
I keep the number for the hydroboard written on the inside of a cupboard door - usually just give the postcode when I 'phone (we get quite a few power outages)
