Here's a thought.....if things went awry overnight tonight and we woke up to a very different world tomorrow morning with no banks open/no cash points working and no shops open how would your existing preparations stand up and how long could you stay low profile at home without having to go out for supplies or any kind? If the power was out too how would you go about doing what needs to be done? How long could you cope for? Interesting to see what answers come back on this one!
:) Several weeks for water and several months for food. A few years for soap and other sanitation supplies. Trouble is, if the WC wouldn't flush, I'd have to go out to dispose of the waste all my eating and drinking would be producing.

Oh, and I'm sick to the back teeth with the BBC and their sodding license fee, as I approach my 30th year as a TV less person. Have had 7 letters and two visits in 6 months. Five of the letters were responded to, in the negative, but nothing stops them. You can't ring 'em and opt out, because there's some kafka-esque loop on their phone system with automated services and there isn't an option select for not having a license because of not having a telly. Burgers are threatening court. I really feel mutinous about the Beeb, don't even bother with their radio progs now. As far as I'm concerned the sooner they die off the better.

You could always deposit That in the now non-functioning bank. :)

Yeah, do they still have those night safe type drawer thingies in the wall which shops used to deposit the takings in?

A couple of months, maybe longer.
If the power was out too how would you go about doing what needs to be done?

Three gas camping stoves, and 10 Kgs of gas.

Once that as used up, I have 2 litres of Bio-Ethanol and any number of stoves to burn it in.

If it all runs out, I'm on cold beans, spaghetti and soup.

For lighting, I have four paraffin Hurricane lamps, and 8 litres of paraffin, 500xtea lights, 32x10" table candles, and an assortment of votive and pillar candles, and, if things get really desperate, a couple of wind up torches.
How long could you cope for?

As with the food, I should think a couple of months, but the lighting will obviously depend on the time of year.

Complete waste of time and energy.

Indeed, all you are doing by responding, is confirming the address is "live", which will just attract visits.

Your letterbox should be like a black hole, from which nothing ever escapes.
  • I asked the question because tonight here is just a normal night, we're bored with the TV we're sat comfy in the lounge thinking about going to bed and reading for a while and it occured to me that if TSHTF it will probably be after an ordinary night and then there will be no time to do all those little preps that you've been intending to do and not got round to yet and then time will have run out to do them. It focuses the mind to consider what is NOT yet done in the thought that we may not have tomorrow to do it in doesn't it?

I would fail badly tbh.. I would have a freezer full of pork that would have to be eaten.. So to save it wasting it would have to be shared..

Tins etc.. I have run low, but I know in this scenario it would be too late, but I am going to do a mega huge shop.( while I have spare money, as we are just about to hit very tough times)

No lighting etc except what the pleasure battery and gas we have in the caravan..

Sooo to the and were to you question.. Not long...

I doubt such an event will be overnight anyway. Or if it does get to that stage it will be foreshadowed by events elsewhere and in the news. Greece was a problem in 2008 but it still has not finished even now. The Greek banks will be bailed in but when? I suspect after 1st January 2016 when the ordinary depositor is the target.

Even if the stock markets collapse over the next few weeks the fall out will take time to take its toll. Any organisations will try and trade on even while insolvent to allow their directors to salt away assets and funds so the impact on them is minimised. It will only be when they really cannot hide the fact any longer will they start declaring bankruptcy. The losses will pile up at interested parties and banks alike. Eventually it will be impossible to hide and eventually the banks will start distrusting each other again and a new credit crunch will happen. As long as you follow the right news sources you will be aware of the problems long before others.

For example there will be other problems which will be apparent long before there is a UK bank holiday. I think we will see problems in Germany before here. Germany is a big exporter to China and if the Chinese economy is slowing down as fast as I think it is then we will hear about German trade surplus falling, even German bankruptcies rising.

I am preparing to move at some point so have eaten the contents of my freezer down considerably but what is left could last me months if eeked out.

Dried foods 6 months or so. Other food a couple of months easily.

Toiletries and cleaning products years as I make my own basic cleaning items.

Heating is covered withe tea light heaters and 500 tea lights, plus lots of duvets, ceramic hot water bottles.

To keep myself occupied I have lots of books games music DVD's etc so can stay in and amused for months.

Cooking is a tougher one to solve but I am looking into solar options either direct solar cooking and using solar panels with induction pad via a big battery set up.

Though if things got that bad I suspect that many of us will be trying to migrate to somewhere else.
