I still don't believe they will be an overnight "one day normal, next day chaos", even when the next financial crash comes.
I enjoy reading the arch druid report and believe the scenario he suggests of a long slow decline is much more likely. Things may well happen differently in different areas as well.
I am hopeful that living semi rural on the edge of a small town that we would fair a little better than those in inner cities but who knows?
Meanwhile will get head down boiling water (grrrr), collecting eggs from chickens and harvesting from the garden. Anyone else got a little pea fan lol, my 7 yr old keeps wandering in with handfuls of pods and gobbling them up like sweets-she even snaffled a load of my dads yesterday on a visit.

I remember enjoying them raw from the pods as a child - I didn't like fresh peas when they'd been cooked though, as I was used to tinned ones!0 -

It is awkward at the moment because I have to use the tablet while DS is working on the computer, he doesn't think it is hard drive failure, but something to do with the canon printer trying to establish a network on bootup.
When he has got it running again I will try and post the link again xBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I get the fight and flight response, even the freezing response. I am a fighter and when pushed won't be the victim. I see myself acting as GQ describes in terms of intruders to her home. I equally see myself making the conscience decisions as Lyn describes.
What I question is the motivation for making the decision. No one really knows how they will react to any given situation, but I would think it severity of the action as a result is more about preserving life than protecting possessions. Now, if those possessions were to save life, well yes, stay and protect but again, I fail to see the difference in terms of who owns the property it is all encased in.0 -
Absolutely, this thread has helped me more than you could ever know during the crisis in Greece...0

We are lucky to have a neighbour who is an archer and both DH and DS go down to the club for what they call a taster session, DS is very good, but he can't afford the club fees
I also bought DH a swagger cane for Christmas last year, it has a solid metal skull on top and would easily smash a skull if needed.
Bugging out for us would be difficult because I am disabled, I am also diabetic on insulin, I do have 3 month's prescription of everything at a time and if needs be I could survive by cutting it down by a few units at each injection.
We have a good stock of tinned, jar and dried food and I try to sneak in a couple of store cupboard meals every week, so the family is familiar with the shtf meal plan.
I need some more pasta sauce and their own brand tinned mince from sainsbugs, they are the best ones and we all like them, so I will ask DH to take me up there this evening when it is quiet.
I have just picked another 5lbs of runner beans and have salted half of them, the rest have gone into the freezer.
I am going to get the dehydrator out and make some fruit leather tomorrow, blueberry and apple , because I have lots of blueberries and the outlaws gave us a load of apples from their trees on Sunday.
I am going to try a plum and ginger one as well because our neighbour has just given us yet another carrier bag full!Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

The stock market could slide for several years as it did between 1929 and 1933. So you should have plenty of time to get debt free. I am in a nearly identical situation. I will be completely debt free in a similar time frame. The advantage of concentrating on debt repayment is that if your income changes for any reason that you have much more scope to cope and make additional changes. I have the additional problem of having to move, so am actually running down food stocks to make the move easier. Though I am also saving money because I am barely spending anything. So once I move I should be able to do a big online order and rebuild stocks overnight when debt free.
I would also take advantage of this time to make changes to basic lifestyle to cut your overheads. I have invested in LED lights so my electricity bill is very low for my lifestyle. My basic principle is to keep my basic costs such as electricity gas TV water etc as low as possible so if ever unemployed I can maintain the same standard of living. In fact many of these sorts of changes have very high rates of return so can be very beneficial in keeping your overheads down and might be as valuable as building food stockpiles.
Also the slide will not necessarily be overnight. It could take months or years to reach its bottom. So you could add an extra can and packet each time you shop. Things like water storage are simpler in that you only need the containers and use tap water.
Cash is something that you can again build over time. I withdraw £50 cashback every couple of weeks as part of my normal routine and what change I get I keep separately and bag up. Then every couple of weeks what ever notes are left are hidden away. So when I run out of notes I get more cash back. It is done slowly and gradually and does not impact my debt clearing efforts. I currently have more than £100 in small change which I could cash in or exchange for notes but from 1Tonsils experience I think I will keep the change as it is more valuable and useful when trying to pay for goods.
Yes, with the cash restrictions still on at the Greek banks, we are all hoarding the small change to use in the shops. Its most frustrating when none of the supermarkets have change and the queues get longer and longer. I carry the change in a small purse which is in my bag all the time. I use it more than using notes! One good thing about the cash restrictions is that we are all managing to save money...although mine is in the bank in the UK and not here.
They are asking everyone to start using the banks here to save, saying that the deposits are guaranteed....yes they are, but only till New Years day! Then , according to a new EU law, all the deposits can be seized for a bail in. No thanks, I will pass on that one. If we have any spare euros we are paying it off the mortgage and paying it in for electric bills in advance etc.
I need to take stock of my supplies, but will leave doing it until after our family have visited us in September. I find it easier to use my stocks than take all the family shopping with me.:rotfl:
We have been eating healthy for a couple of months now and my husband is suggesting going vegetarian so going to give it a go. It is much easier and cheaper to stock up on lentils and pulses, both dried and ready cooked. It just needs a bit more imagination with the cooking, and of course it has to be gluten free for me to eat.
It looks like we are going to elections about the third week in September, which coincides with my sixtieth birthday. Having a party for friends and family, whoever wins the election. I cant see things being much different from now really. It wont make much difference.
I heard today that the social insurance funds have had to borrow money to be able to pay even the reduced pensions for next month. Its not sounding good at all for any of us.
Going to start planning for the upcoming winter soon, I do like to be ready for anything that might be thrown at us;)0 -
Interested in your comments about defending yourself. In a recent conversation with a policeman here, he pointed out that if someone you have not invited is in your home, it is counted as them having struck the first blow.....so defend yourself fast and hard and hit them with something heavy....then call the police in. Even grabbing someone by the arm or threatening them is counted as assault and striking the first blow...if you feel threatened you are entitled to defend yourself however you think is necessary.
I know my neighbours have shotguns in most of their houses and they would use them if necessary on an intruder in their home. The little old lady next door to me is a dab hand with a broom...I have seen her in action lol...and I dont mean sweeping the floors....0
