You can get very ill from handling coins, I know someone who got very ill within hours of handling a lot of them, cashing up gaming machines. Ill enough to be hospitalised and put on a drip. Not good.
I'm livid when I see people hawking and spitting on the street. This is a filthy habit which has been known to spread all sorts, even tuberculosis. I was also less than impressed with a woman standing beside me in a chazzer, a woman of my own age. She sneezed into her bare fingers and immediately reached for a book with her snotty fingers. Eww!
I've wondered what a small community would do if you had an individual whose filthy habits were undermining everyone's health? Would you be tolerant or would you say to yourself that you and perhaps your child have been made very ill, you think this filthy person's habits are the cause, and you want them to shape up or ship out?
I ge annoyed with my neighbours who rock up to our communal skip bins and sling their black sack onto the top of an already overful bin, so the lid can't go down and the foxes get in. There is a completely empty bin beside it, in most cases, but they're too flipping lazy to check it out.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

You should always get your cash from AitchEssBeeCee's atms at they are very good at money laundering. I like my cash well-laundered and preferably ironed, too.
Seriously, an ordinary soap-and water wash will be fine, perhaps followed by an anti bac gel if you're really concerned.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Sorry to hear you've been so unwell, craigywv, & wishing you time to recover properly, as something like that does knock the stuffing out of you.
But I do have to say, I do think it's possible to be too clean & germ conscious; I'm probably the world's worst housewife (not proud of this at all, just being realistic) but am hardly ever ill, and neither are my fairly robust offspring. (Maybe because they've met most of the germs known to mankind already, in their own home.) I grew up surrounded by chickens, cows & sheep, eating fruit & veg so organic it sometimes still had caterpillars in it, and with a two-holer outhouse in regular use, complete with dripping pheasants from time to time; can't imagine what kind of germ-load I must have encountered before I turned 5!
But somehow the nasties that reside in the countryside are very different to the ones in inner cities; don't get me wrong, things like tetanus are out there & did (still do) kill, but I'll swear that by & large, rural/small town life doesn't leave one so open to passing infections.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
I do realise this is really sad nit-picking but I had to do it..
--- point out that England isn't an island.
LOL!
My American sister-in-law was taught in primary school that "it never snows in England, because England is an island" <rolls eyes>
ETA Just caught up properly. thriftwizard I misread that as dripping peasants :eek:0 -
Things can get a bit confusing sometimes....one of the minor adaptations I've had to learn since moving from England to Wales is not to refer to "this country" in conversation - because a lot of people will instantly assume I'm just referring to Wales. But, whenever I did that in England, I never once had anyone assume I just meant England:huh:. If I'd only meant England - I would have said "England".
I catch myself fast and say "Britain" anytime I would previously say "this country".0 -
thanks thriftx,I too was brought up in country on a farm for my younger years and rem the kitchen floor was caked when it rained with bits of moo poo lol it seems the older I get the more open to whatever goes about for goodness sake I have had chicken pox 3 times according to my doctor, was lead to believe only get it twice too. anyway im aware that I prob will catch whatever comes my way even if household gets the cold I get it with more added on lol at least son takes after oh stomach like a galvanised bucket im happy to say.dont get me wrong im not a sickly person hardly ever ill but if theres something out there I sure to be among first to get it and leave me quickly works ok as I then can mind my family or whoever is sick. xxxlol @ post about not snow in England as its an islandxxxC.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z #7 member N.I splinter-group co-ordinater

of course historically this is exactly what has always happened, however, as we never know exactly what the whole mechanism of anything is and "people" as a breed go for the "common sense" answer no matter what the truth is - this is the very basis for small-minded bigotry and prejudice (foreigners being unclean and spreading disease, because their cleanliness rituals were different, single women cavorting with the devil and bringing pestilence, doing/being/believing anything different being a cause for the mob to apply pressure) - sneezing and anti-bac soap/gel is a case in point - our world is awash with bacteria and viruses, unless you are very poorly the likelihood of contracting anything other than an immune boosting viral disease from someones unwashed, sneezed on hand is infinitesimal. Anti-bac gel and anti-bac soap kill your own beneficial bugs (which are smothered over every surface and crevice of each of us) allowing space for bad bacteria to get a foot-hold and do us damage, they also are linked to the rise in auto-immune disease and are contributing to a shift in the resistance of bacteria to physical and chemical means of control.
so who do we as a small community chuck out? the person who sneezes and doesn't wash her hand and risks passing on low level germs to many, or the one who does wash with anti-bac gel and risks upsetting the balance of flora and us all getting ill from superbugs?
I'm not advocating chucking out either actually - I believe the survival of the species is routed very firmly in us all behaving differently - and therefore no matter what, someone will survive. It is the difference and range that is important: uniformity kills.:AA/give up smoking (done)0 -
You would have to establish a set of conditions that are agreed by ALL of the community, reach a happy medium of cleanliness that would be the minimum tolerated by everyone in that community (more would be perfectly acceptable on a personal basis, less would mean not being admitted) and have regular community meetings to raise and deal with any individual not adhering to those rules. You would also need an uncrossable line over which you only step when being required to leave the community for NOT keeping the community rules and regulations. Not easy but perhaps necessary!0

I think it is what we are used to. I never bother with anti bacterial because it does not give our bodies regular exposure to germs and as a result we get ill when we experience something new. I do have anti bac for emergencies and for others to use, but plain old soap suits me.It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0
