  • Hi NOBODYSPECIAL I hope my post wasn't insulting to you. I know there are people who can't afford to buy in thier local area because of outrageous house prices in London as well as everywhere else and there are many lovely people who live in the big city that I would welcome here with open arms. We seem to get the ones who have sold houses at premium prices and then come to what they perceive to be a nice village, buy a massive house here, rebuild it in a style that stands out like a sore thumb, move in and then give nothing to the local community but complaints about the lack of amenities they've been used to and our archaic ways. They nearly always have several big 4 x 4 cars which they park on the narrow roads around here and have noisy people visit and party into the small hours most weekends (one even has a big enough garden for the tiny helicopter to land in it, so noisy) then they complain as others have said of crowing cockerels, church bells, dogs who wee on the hedge round thier house, noisy seagulls and the smell of the river at low tide. That's why they are not too popular not because they are from London. Your problems are as pertinent and as unfair as any we have out in the sticks my friend, I'm sorry if I offended you with my first post.

There are ways and ways of thinking of urban v. rural outlook. Me - I shall stick with my objective logical urban way of thinking I have and no-one gets let off the hook for wrongdoing or better treated just because they are "local" on the one hand.

On the other hand - I'll take a leaf out of their book and if there is a quick/simple way to deal with something when the "official" way will take forever or never - then its the direct method I'll use too. In the "back of beyond" then sometimes things are a bit different to what I'm used to.

:( Is anyone else having problems with the forum? Yesterday when I went to hit the thanks button on some posts, I got a message saying it had timed out and then that Thanks button had disappeared from that person's post but you could thank the next one down. And, then you went to post, it told you your request had timed out? I got around the latter by copying and pasting, whilst starting afresh.

Today it's doing it again, grr, and sounds like Fuddle may be having a similar problem as she mentions losing posts - btw, it was her post that wouldn't let me thank this morning.

Any ideas what's going on, lovely people?

We've had some very strong winds in this neck of the woods and I got a hollow laugh from a tree officer during yesterday's shift when I rang across to report another downed tree and asked how many we were up to, today? The tree officers are passionate about their sylvan charges. One of them once told my former housemates that they'd prefer a house in the way of a tree to come down, rather than the other way around.:D

Jesting aside, I dread strong winds when the trees are in leaf, it can take the whole blessed thing over. Hoping we don't have too much rough weather between now and November...............

:) Good luck for your window replacement and other works, daz. My flat is apparently needing to be rewired, as are all the Tower flats. Dunno when that might be done, but it might not even be in this financial year, I'm guessing. They took my windows out for upvc replacement in Dec one year. Talk about parky.............:rotfl:

While it could be relevant to some, I wonder how many of us will be really impacted if it lasts for a long time. Personally it will mean no more President butter for me for a while (once my freezer stocks are gone) but there are plenty of alternatives that can be used instead. As someone who tries to reduce their food miles anyway this will have a minimal impact on my diet or budget.

Also for most of us with months of food in storage this is just a blip.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

You're correct, my bad, I even missed the fact that Kinnock was still a EU commisioner.

This appears to be day three of forum problems. It seems to be happening across the boards.
The PTB are aware of it, but there seems to be no updates or progress

Though I'd rather the techs are working to resolve the issues rather than writing progress reports.
Incidentally I've been having problems with the "new look" as well as the old one - which I far prefer, but having multiple 'puters to play with it made sense (to me) to test both.

Today it's doing it again, grr, and sounds like Fuddle may be having a similar problem as she mentions losing posts - btw, it was her post that wouldn't let me thank this morning.

Server dying - either in the load balancing array or the database controller. Denial of service attack - though not a particularly good one. I would hope its not a software upgrade gone wrong because that should be fast and easy to revert to the previous known good state. Anything better in the way of guesses would need access to unavailable data and preferably a contract (no I'm not touting for business, the thought of a mob of OSers baying for my blood with pinnies and rolling pins - and the odd pitchfork - is not good for my blood pressure).
  • GQ it's still timing me out today, really annoying and then I can't get connected for a good 10 minutes afterwards, makes trying to post or send a pm almost impossible, unless you type really quickly!
