  • We'd obviously try to take the car as far as we could but have to understand that that may not be a very great distance with the density of traffic we have down here. Walking from wherever we could get to will be the only option then. It pays to know where all the alleyways and footpaths lead to and from in your local area as it will be less congested on those than trying to get along streets and roads already congested with traffic and scared and cross people. I know how to get from here to open country across the M27 without having to touch a tarmacked road, might be a lot safer I think!

:) Hmm, I was about to take a not-much used pinboard off the inside of a hall cupboard door, but now that I think about it, it would be the ideal place to have dedicated to 'packing lists' if I had to make moves in a hurry. It can stay.
I hadn't seriously thought about packing lists, as opposed to packing up ready .... I've got the "get out in 60 seconds" bag, and I've got about 8 24l plastic crates, which I could stash in my sister's car if she came to get me and we were bugging in at her place. I don't actually have anything in between, except that single little first aid bag I packed recently. Must do better. A list would be a good start.
 It was nice to see Skye and a few other lovely places again in the photies, my gosh, isn't the Quiraing on a sunny day out of this world? You keep expecting Legolas to ride around the corner on a white horse or something........:rotfl:
I read Lord of the Rings for the first time when I was backpacking around the Greek Islands, I really did expect to see Strider's boat coming over the horizon to the rescue of Minas Tirith
One thing I remember from travelling the world that it is sometimes very handy to have some passport sized photos with you, for various purposes. I will need to renew a photo-ID card in about 3 months, so will get some done then and keep the three spares as part of my personal documentation folder in the BOB. To which I am about to add letters from my hospital and my GP ref the critical nature of my medicatoin, which I obtained for international travel, in case any customs official decided to get difficult.
Thats what I need a list for, you're right - that stuff of mine is in a little fireproof case.

:p I can't come all that way, besides I'm sheep-phobic. I suppose I could revert to a maiden name on the distaff side 2 gens back - it begins Mc
and try to pretend to be a native.

Didja notice that the surrey bike has a fringe on top? I can't help but redesigning it for a covert appearance. I'd have that stripy canopy off for starters, replaced by something in woodland camo, paint the frame grey-green and carry additonal camo netting to sling over it at rest. Could be big fun, as long as you didn't have to go down any narrow alleyways.

My part of Provincial City is effectively the old town, with lots of labyrinthine alleys between the ancient streets, some of which are on a 1,000 year old streetplan. I walk the alleys regularly, to keep myself refreshed about exactly where each one runs.

A random convo with my Dad a handful of years ago revealed that he and Mum had no idea that there was a cut thru from one nearby street to another, despite it being less than 100 yards away and them having lived in the same house since 1971. Bro and I knew it because we'd grown up there and run wild all over the place. Kids are also a bit like vermin; if there's a hole in/ under a fence to somewhere you're not supposed to go, your neighbourhood kids will know it.

No, OH never made it out (had his passport stolen, long story) me and 16 year old DD were peddling, 13 year Old DS was in the back complaining that we were too slow. So we turfed him out and made him walk :D

:D I like it! Post-apocalypse there will be no passengers in the back; could you have made him push as well as walk?

I still want to pimp that ride..........

A person on foot, with a backpack and perhaps a wally trolley, will get out a lot faster than a car in those situations. My R0lser trolley is rated for 18 kg, if memory serves. And a cyclist would be even faster, you don't need much clearance for a bike trailer, I used to have one but can't have one now as nowhere to put it.

I keep socks folded in the tops of walking boots, though the gaiters are with the waterproofs - thank you that is about to change.
Local Facebook group has a couple of bike trailers for sale, the pet carrier one is completely collapsible for storage - will admit to being very tempted but I'd need to resurrect my bike (and the ability to use it) before I consider a trailer.
Living in a port town the easiest way out may well be by boat, though currently I'd opt for foot, going up the south bank of the river - almost invisible for the first 7 or 8 miles but fairly easy going, part of the reason being ordinary weekend traffic would be a nightmare with a bike trailer - add some panic and I doubt you'd get through on skates let alone a bike.

Mar I reckon 4 or 5 days on foot, I might have eaten most of the cake.
