  • HI all
Well a rather strange day of weather, it looked "nearly sunny" first thing, then pee'd down and now its got that grey doom look.

I am feeling quite good about the bits and pieces of food ive managed to stash away. It looks like it could even make up some decent meals:D. I've decided i'm not going to stop though, I think I will keep buying an extra of the things we regularly use so that we have even more food security.

Love the book selections guys, but ive promised myself I will not buy anymore until I get another bookcase sorted as I keep falling over them:o.

The house smells amazing with the dehydrator on, its taken a bit longer than i expected but I think I had it down too low, so lots of experimentation needed.

The garden is looking a bit chaotic but the Kale is growing like topsy. So I may have green gills in a month or two.

Hope all of you are well today and If you can are having a productive/stress free/relaxing day (delete as applicable)
    Hugs WLL x

It may sound bad if you are not the person affected but the threshold is very, very low in the UK and it will be gone in perhaps 6 months. Also as you must know(as it happens everywhere)many people pass money amongst friends and family over many years, nothing like that is going on. Now that is questionable. But come on how many do that or would given the chance.

Some on here are too open and honest and open themselves up to be given a kicking...

I do think some posters have perhaps been a bit short with you pops, but we are a family of 6 and if we had 17k in the bank it would last alot more than 6 months and we have a mortgage.

I reckon living well and not pulling the belt too tight we could do a year easy on that. Living as we have at certain points with belts tightened to the max I reckon we might hit 18months or even a year. So thats ALOT of money to most of us. Don't forget to have a take home pay for a YEAR of 17k you would need to earn over 20k.

TBH I have no problem with anyone looking after the pennies, but I can see how people who are living REALLY hand to mouth can get upset at someone moaning about losing benefits because of a large inheritence. For most of us we would be jumping up and down at getting that sort of money (not at the loss of a loved one obviously).

I would say get it claimed, stock up on foods which are highly likely to shoot up in value, and budget to make the money last as long as possible. Then once back under the limits claim benefits again.

    Good luck

I'll be watching it hopefully soon courtesy of zombie obsessed older sons :D they usually find me a link only thing is they never last long so you have to watch it quick!

Eldest has the books too see I'm bringing them up well :rotfl:

Just prepped a ton of veg for the freezer/dehydrator just have another 4 kg of carrots to go,a swede and about 50 apples!

The trees where I forage are bare of apples and pears this year so we have plums and damsons stored for the winter mainly as well as the homegrown fruits,I'm lucky that my lot all eat most fruits its just the veg they're a bit more picky with.

Lovely fat rosehips and sloes though so will see how I'm fixed for jars and time in the next couple of weeks..I may make something else.

Right sat down for 5 mins must get back to it or I'll get too comfy..

Hope everyone's having a constructive day XXX

Just found 3 onions and 3 beetroot on the doorstep off my neighbour - leeks the other day and a fab cucumber. Can't make my mind up what to do with the beetroot? may make DGs some crisps, he loves veggie crisps. I am very pleased with the de-hydrating and seem to have got my technique right. leeks are amazing when dried and I can eat them on a sandwich to add a bit of texture. So far have quite a lot of veg preserved that way and pleased with the whole thing.

Got pickling onions yesterday so they are next. Am thinking you could make chutneys from dried veg which will add a bit of variety to supplies. Sm's are scary places now with all the price hikes so am using the local market as much as possible. The cabbage I bought yesterday felt quite heavy so i thought I would use half today and dry the rest but when I cut into it it was not very dense inside, am guessing its due to the poor weather that the cabbages may not be filling out as well as usual.

Our weather report said its going to be mild next week - sounds like mild and torrential rain more like

I picked up some shallots cheap at MrT Ginny and they've pickled lovely..just need to resist eating them for a couple of weeks.
Glad the leeks and stuff have turned out so well I was quite pleased with the savoys I've done in there I've got a few tomato stragglers to go in and some apples next :D
Those peeler, corer, slicer thingies are handy for apples I even managed to do my pears on there too (fat end on the spikes) as the blade just follows the contours.

Hello been reading the prepping bits of this thread with interst for a few days now and feel I have found a nice little hidey hole for me. I have always been a bit obsessed with prior planning and preparation. It drives DH mad but he pretty much lets me get on with it now. It is a toss up between what i am prepping against, ranging from weather issues, to DH losing 30% of his salary (grr to his work) to me losing my job (so much more of an issue as I work for an very small business) to generally food being too expensive to buy.

We have done a load of big ticket prepping over recent years like installing solar panels, insulation, more insulation, more insulation, boarding out loft, loads of shelving installed, fixing windows, taking up laminate and putting carpet and mega thick underlay down, dehumidifier purchase, decluttering and sorting outdoor clothing out for maximum warmth (both used to have bikes, go camping, had horses and so on so we are well used to the trials and tribulations of this) storage creation, more storage creation. Stockpiling has taken on a whole new dimension we have about 6 to 8 months of food in at any one time, so we now have to have a stock usage and rotation system ......

This weekend we have pretty much competed the basic prep for winter on the house. Every kitchen cupboard, the under stairs cupboard, the over the stairs cupboard, loft, both fridges, both freezers and most of the conservatory are now groaning under the weight of food and household goods. Outside the garden is pretty much clear. Just a few plants to finish cutting back when they have died a bit more.

All I need to do now is to sort out the snow shovel and chains for the car (means braving the garage-man-cave) and rotate the food provisions and water for it!

We have as standard in the cars fluoro jackets, insulating mats, hand warmers, some water (but used nearly all of it in a traffic jam last week from mine) wind up torches and so on.

I want more wind up Torches in the house and to get more solid fuel in for the camping /emergency cooking facilities. Then maybe some more thick wooly socks.

I have been told I can't get a diesel generator to kick over from electric supply if the fuel fails, but we do live in a suburb of a large town, so I may be taking this a bit far ..... But I know someone who has and I can walk there if necessary.

We do a lot of mass cooking / veg prepping and these stocks worry me as these are woefully low compared to previous years, so I am off to the markets to try and stock up over the next few weeks. We had a gift of some root veg from a friendly farmer friend in summer but it is simply not enough. I have some galvanised former feed bins great for storage, great for storage and I have kicked the car out of the garage to put these in. About £5 extra a year on the insurance and so worth it from peace of mind. I do feel for those with small places and storage issues. I suspect if I we allowed I would have a bunker full, in fact it is a must have for the forever house ...... One day!

Am I allowed to come and hide here please? will i be allowed to Confess my prep obsession (really it is an obsession I get so stressed if I don't have enough in stock , DH now just let's me get on with it, but he draws the line at more than 9 months supply of any one item in the house ..... I am working on this)

Happy prepping all, my next target is the rest of the conservatory ......
