  • I'd agree that it's probably a different "breed" of wheat; one suitable for growing without constantly being drenched in pest- & herbicides. It may well be an older, taller variety that doesn't have as much gluten, and as GQ says, not heavily dosed with "flour improver" too. Not as fluffy but much better for you, and much tastier bread, once you've worked out the best way to use it - a long, slow rise & closely-sealed oven job, usually.

My life insurance is pay monthly for life. I didn't want to do it like this but I'm an idiot and didn't have one till I was 60 and then never had a choice. At the moment I'm paying £13 a month but it continues to cost more each month till it reaches £25 per month. How I will manage this I do not know. But manage this I will. I cannot bear the idea my children would have to deal with it.
It's bitterly cold here today and it never stopped raining all day yesterday.
Who thinks we are really in for a bad winter? I can cope with the snow and cold but not the rain.

Also look into the idea of getting the insurance policy written in Trust. That way the payout will not be part of your estate and no inheritance taxes will liable on it.

So pleased I've been prepping. No water in my area tonight. Plenty of bottled water for a cuppa though.

Let's hope both your mother & mine will get their royal 'telegram' Karma :p You have to 'order' the card well in advance, plus it ain't cheap; my great-aunt was lucky enough to reach the century & some cousins organised it for her. It was a birthday-type card with a photo of 'er Maj, wearing a twin set & pearls think twas... & a rubber stamped signature on the inside. Somehow I thought it would be a bit more than that, but it shows how someone's personal experience of anything is always handy to know :)

After Dad passed, we organised an Enduring Power of Attorney with Mum that was supposed to cover any eventualities. Now we are beginning to enter the realms of actually needing the blessed thing, TPTB have gone & changed the ruddy rules  The bit we have got is still legal up to a point, but we can't get it upgraded because of 'reasonable doubt to the mental cognition capabilities', meaning Mum is not capable of making an informed decision because she is being investigated for memory impairment.
Considering the new paperwork is to give my sister & I the say so on what medical intervention to allow the medics to put Mum through, it all seems a bit teasing-smiley-sticking-tongue-out-emoticon.gif
And she can't sign a Living Will either :(

I didn't have to pay for the outlaws 60th anniversary card, but I did have to order it well in advance, it is very easy to do.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

:T Go, prepper! Cuppa-crisis narrowly averted. Did you get any warning or is the supply just down?

:) Hey, shout out to nuatha, or any other techy person reading, have you any idea why microsarft security essentials has suddenly started to work on my unsupported operating system (XP)?

It did a scan and is now sitting down there in the corner with a happy green pavilion with its tick mark, instead of the cross red pavilion and the bossy twice-every-start-up pop up windows telling my my computer is unprotected.

Any clue WTH is going on here?

No warning GQ. It was a massive burst somewhere. Two towns lost their water. Back on now though. Will replenish my stock tomorrow.
  • Evening all, chilly one tonight, can't decide whether it's going to be a mild winter like last or a Siberian blast as the last couple of days might suggest.... winter togs at the ready.

One thing I have noticed in life is that the more you are sold on the idea of buying peace of mind, extended warranties, insurances etc etc, the less cash you have to hand and the less able you are to whether any storms. And, somehow, whatever sooper-dooper gold-plated all bells and whistles insurance cover you thought you'd paid for doesn't quite cover what you thought.
The approach I've taken to insurance, is not to insure anything unless I absolutely couldn't afford to replace it otherwise. So things like houses, insured, car, insured but pretty much nothing else. If you can afford to replace something, even if it might mean cash being tight for a while, why pay someone to take that risk for you and their cut too? Of course the tighter your budget the less room for error here, so the poor get hammered more because they can take fewer risks.

A better question, GQ, is why are you bothering with Micros0ft security essentials? I don't trust them an inch. For no particular reason other than the big brother aspect. For a free antivirus I'd try Avast! which is entertainingly pirate themed and as I say, free. Alternatively some internet providers (who are you with anyway?) offer free antivirus as do some internet banking services.
I'm not sure what to do about the ending of XP support, my suspicion is that so long as you are reasonably careful (not opening unknown email attachments, not responding to invitations to help out distressed Nigerian millionaires and not surfing to www.dodgywebsitesRus.com you'll most probably be ok.

You still need home contents because while individually you could afford to replace any individual item it is the total loss that will devastate you. If you under insure they will simply reduce any payment on the basis that you were under insured.

If you saved up sufficient to self insure fully then you create other problems, like access to benefits, which for most people are a necessity to cope.

:) Thanks, PP. D'you know if Avast works with XP? This unsupported operating system is resolutely refusing to fall over, btw. My pooter is from 2002 and even though my Computer Wizard has pimped it with a number of things the manufacturer never intended, such as doubling the RAM, it hasn't got enough capacity to handle the newer operating systems and I really hate cranking open my wallet to replace working tech (glances at 18 y.o. stereo as she types, S0ny make quality gear).

I have home contents insurance to protect me from a total loss, which would strain the budget to replace. I have also encountered people applying for benefits who haven't understood that money held in ISAs, or whatever they're calling them now, is counted towards your total capital when determining your eligibility for means-tested benefits. And who have, in some cases, been using ISAs to save towards their pension, and now they're unemployed and claiming.........not good.

Wow to the total unexpected water loss, boddy, and don't you feel a touch smug at having water supplies in? Good on ya, and maybe some other residents of those two towns will have had a wake-up call and decided a few bottles of water are a good idea.
