Most of these diseases, including flu which as mentioned is still very dangerous. are caught when the bugs on your hands come into contact with eyes, nose or mouth. So more important than not touching the toilet doors, IMO, is developing good habits of not rubbing eyes or mouth and washing hands well before eating. This might be obvious to some of us, but just watching people in the street you can see that a lot of people are not too careful in this respect.

Yes I agree, PP. I banned myself from buying at a major supermarket's deli after going to the ladies and seeing a deli assistant leave without washing her hands, then going back to work on the deli. She then started to serve people without washing her hands behind the counter.

Muffin Man - hope the daughters are recovering.

Worth recording to watch when less tired... sorry if anyone has already mentioned them.

  • Good very early morning to you all.
On my second cup of coffee already but have a busy day ahead.
How awful for your DDs Muffin Man, hope they begin to feel better today.
Picked up some more preps yesterday including those batteries Bob & some of the meatball tins from L1d! GQ. As the store cupboards are now full, I've started 2 emergency boxes, one for cleaning & hygiene products & the other for foodstuffs & popped them upstairs. I'm just going to add items that are on offer like the 25p tins of beans, 59p sugar & 33p shower gel until they are full & if we don't experience a SHTF scenario in the next 2/3 yrs, will open them up and eat & clean at a few yrs ago prices... kind of like a time capsule. I will make & add a note of the prices paid & pop it in the box to compare the difference in so many yrs time. It's a bit of light hearted fun but also a bit of added security.
Water wise, we only have bottled & I need to look at 2nd & 3rd options in the coming weeks so thank you for the useful information on Milton & bleach as ways of sterilising.
I'm also aiming to get to 100 toilet rolls & restock as used. Yesterday they went through 2 & a half  it seems every time I go I have to replace it & it really is a bug bear of mine. I don't know what they do with it & it's not the cheapest (l1d!s 20 when on offer) Think I will start crushing the roll in half especially with half term coming up.
Winter prep wise I need to get 2 large chocolate/mink/cocoa coloured fleeces to safety pin to thin curtains at huge patio doors.
Ebola news wise, it seems to have quietened down the last few days on our media. I'm hoping that the next few weeks bring no further cases in the US, showing us that it can be successfully handled in wealthier countries so that efforts can be focused on tackling it in Africa.

Oh goodness, Muffin man 7, here's hoping your DDs are soon on the mend. Here we all are watching out for exotic diseases, but their experience goes to show just how nasty "everyday" threats can be.

Another one owning up to having both John Seymour and Richard Mabey, more than one book in both cases! I also found John Yeoman's Self-Reliance thought-provoking & useful. I'm less inclined to read about the psychological aspects of prepping/surviving; I think anyone aware enough to own & read books like these is probably going to have a "can-do" mindset, which will stand you in good stead far more than any amount of physical preps.

I will not be prepping for ebola because I think the risks are minimal, also the prices for such items will have shot up. I will however get some water storage cans in so if necessary can isolate myself for the duration. I will not bother buying in water, tap water is sufficient. I have plenty of dried food and items in the freezer so will be able to cope.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I'm loving the sound of Canadian window quilts, elaine241, I googled and had a whole cloud of them suddenly appear :)

Muffin Man - how utterly horrendous! Hope you've had better news by now, and you're all catching up on your sleep.

Preps today: tidying! I'm forever tidying. And using up expensive skincare products that I was gifted so I have more space for preps :D if it then so happens that my skin feels lovely, well, thats just a fortunate by-product :j
