Have you considered a recharging battery set up? If there is going to be intermittent power then rechargables will be a viable option. It also allows you to minimise standard batteries for when things get really dire.

One of the problems with rechargeable batteries is that they don't hold charge over time. They are useful when you can plan a regular use/discharge cycle and combined with a solar charger could be useful in a SHTF scenario but not left in kit that you need to be ready when you need it but aren't using regularly.

Fingers crossed it goes as smoothly as it can.

    Already done it.

I have a couple of sets of AA rechargeables.

I have a set of Asda 2500mAh, and a set from a company on Amazon, called 7 DAYSHOP.COM, which are a massive 2900mAh.

The only down side I find with rechargables is, they tend to quit suddenly, rather than fade out.

Regarding Nicads, this gadget I came up with recently might interest you guys:

I needed to come up with something that would keep the power tool batteries ready for use any time I need them, without leaving them on charge permanently. I wanted to discharge all the batteries once a week, and then recharge them on cheaper overnight electricity.

The only day I don't do any work is Sunday, so this seems the ideal day to discharge. Then the batteries are recharged in the early hours of Monday morning. I have just built this:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=615&d=1404992568

It has two timeswitches. One is a 7 day timeswitch that is shown with a plug inserted in it, and the other is a 24 hour immersion heater one within the grey box. Two of the relays connect to one timeswitch, and two to the other.

All the chargers you can see have had the charging circuits separated from the batteries, and connected to wires leading to the grey box. The 7 day timewitch comes on from 8am Sunday to 6am Monday, and the 24 hour timeswitch is set for 11.45pm to 7am, although it's ouput is only activated when the 7 day one is on.

Thus at 8am on Sunday morning, two relays come on connecting the batteries to discharging resistors inside the grey box. There are also LED's fed by each battery so that I can see if there is a bad contact.

At 11.45pm on Sunday night, the 24 hour timeswitch comes on, switching on the plugstrip at the bottom, and the other two relays also come on, connecting the batteries to their chargers instead of the discharge resistors. This continues until the 7 day timeswitch switches off at 6am. (Actually happens around 6.45 due to engineering tolerances of the mechanism.)

As you can see, there is also space for four AA to D cells.

I recently bought some battery cases for my BOB and a storage rack with battery tester from the same company.
