Like GQ said its the slow dilution of living standards and the long term management of expectations..... the first shock to the system maybe a yes vote by Scotland..... market uncertainty ... small run on pound, affect on how we measure the deficit , loss off export income...... we just may get a taste of what life as been like in...spain, portugal, greece the last few years and a perpetual tory government anyone?

Once the next financial crisis strikes then I fully expect that to be the norm. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

:p Archery re-starts tonight after its summer holibobs. I need to practise my shooting skills ahead of the revolution. Arrows are silent and re-usable, you know it makes sense. Twang!!!!!!

I've been keeping a weather eye on the wicked of the world (politicians etc) and doing practical stuff like cultivating my allotment and discreetly adding a few more tins into the supplies. Just a couple here and there, nothing to raise eyebrows from a cashier.

Reading the increasingly-hysterical meeja coverage, it seems that no one has a blinking clue what will happen if the Scots decide they want to detach from the UK, for them or for the rest of the country. Opinion seems to be heading towards an end of the world scenario (hence my choice of the word hysteria). Truth is, it hasn't been done before and I guess nobody knows.

Ach well, I haven't a vote, so will just have to spectate from the sidelines and we'll see what we'll see. September is usually an interesting month, historically, don't you find?

Also it is very efficient in terms of killing zombies, as long as you can recover your arrows. Though you could also make your own if necessary.

If the Scots do decide to leave the union then it would mean more of the problems being left in the rest of the union. The big banks would probably have to move to London for their own safety. Scotland would become like Iceland if the banks failed, as Scotland would be too small to backstop the reckless lending of the banks. So I expect them to move south. Though for Scotland that might actually be a good thing.

  • We all survived as separate countries with our own identity before union took place so I guess once adjustments to thinking have been made, if it's a yes vote, we'll all survive as separate countries again. This is after all 2014 and hopefully we'll all behave considerately towards each other (jury's out on that one!) and once the dust has settled life will go on and new relationships with separate countries will have to be forged and new accommodations made with those in power. We are after all allegedly adults!!!
  • DD1, 22, has just asked me anxiously whether we ought to get some basic supplies in "Just in case the banks get a bit wobbly if there's a Yes vote next week..."

Bless her, nice to know she's thinking along those lines, but I don't know how she hasn't noticed that we generally have at least a month's worth of food/toiletries/cleaning stuff in hand and considerably more of some items! Heaven only knows where she thinks we'd fit any more...

I never really considered there might be a crisis of some sort if the vote is yes.....and I suspect it will be a yes vote.

I have been thinking about my winter preps and I am going to be on the look out for goodies at the car boot sales when they start up again in the middle of this month. We have a large open fire and I may look for some pans suitable for cooking on it during the winter. Can anyone recommend what type to look for?

I will also be stocking up on waterproof and warm clothing as I think we are going to have a very cold, wet winter if the storms so far are anything to go by.

Italy and Spain have terrible storms at the moment, so much damage to roads, crops and bridges and there are more storms on the way. We managed to get a day without a storm though it looked touch and go at one point. The mainland has had terrible storms and tornadoes this evening but we seem to have clear skies.

I have heard jet fighters flying over today and tonight there seems to be many big heavy planes flying in and out of the airport. It has been going on for hours so I am wondering if there is something going on in the middle east.We are sure to find out sooner or later.

Tonight a Greek seismologist has stated that he thinks Greece will get a large earthquake around 20th of this month, but if Italy gets a big quake around 16th then we won't get one. There was no explanation of how he decided this. It puts me in mind of the last Greek seismologist who predicted quakes accurately a few years ago...... he lost his job for frightening people even though he was correct!:rotfl:

    Hi :)

My mum used to cook on the fire when we had power cuts in the 70s. She always made sure she had a lid on the pan and that it had a heavy bottom and metal handle. She also had an old fashioned paraffin lantern ( but I'm not sure whether you can buy these any more) cos candles were in short supply.

I'm showing my age now :)

:) Ooooh, my back's killing me from archery but it was big fun as per usual. One of my fellow inmates had a new toy; a foldable all metal longbow imported from the US. Its limbs fold down into the riser when not strung and it means you have a very neat package about 2 ft x 1.5 inches which could easily go into any bag and not even look like a bow.

They're advertised as so tough you can drive a car across them without harm. Natch, I had to have me a go and it's not as smooth as my longbow but it's pretty darned neat anyway. Covet, covet........http://www.goprimalnow.com/Compact_Folding_Survival_Bow_p/cfsb-1-50.htm

1tonsil, I think your best bet would be cast iron if you can get it.
