2T, I am registered there, found the admin quite straightforward and the process very fast. However you need to post at least once per month otherwise they cancel your membership.

There is a lot of very interesting info there but I feel very small and very insignificant there, I haven't really found my feet there yet, but I am going to give it a few more tries then will decide whether to stay or go.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Perhaps it was my signal on the internet but I found it impossible to get onto the forum to post my introduction..it kept telling me I was forbidden from that part or could not access till my intro was approved. But you can't get it approved if you can't post it can you? I wondered if it might be because I am in Greece?

We used to use the ashes from the fire to clear icy patches. Cat litter (Mr T value sort ) is also useful and less damaging to plants than salt.

Well I now have something specific to prep for - I need an operation on my hand. I had the same operation 2 years ago but it wasn't a success so it has to be redone. However I know from last time, it will be a good month before I can use my left hand, so driving will be out for a month - it hurt too much to even hold the steering wheel.

So next week will be devoted to a big supermarket shop and filling the freezer with bol sauce/chilli/lasagne/casseroles. Just as well I defrosted it recently.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Well maryb you have prepped ready for more prepping by defrosting the freezer.

Caterina, congratulations on the driving success, you can drive down and see me eventually once you have got used to getting around again :) As for the prepping, you will get there bit by bit untill you are comfortable with it. And you have fleeces so you are half way there :D

As for the corsets Im afraid my days of clubs (of various kinds cough ) are gone for now and the corsets are packed away till I re- emerge as a night owl again. So I wont really cut them up just gaze at them occasionally and remember the wild nights and boy were they wild :D

    :) Evening all.

Could anyone recommend a reliable wind-up radio please?

I really think it would be a useful item to have. TIA.:)

MAR - Ikea make a reading type lamp that is solar powered, it is called SUNNAN or something very similar to that. We have two and they don't need sunlight to recharge the solar cell, just daylight. We leave ours set up on the windowsill and that keeps them charged. They are bright enough to read by and the charge lasts for some 12 - 16 hours, although it does dim towards the end of the time period. When we got ours some 3 years ago they were £12.99 each, don't know prices today. The nice thing with this model is when you buy one they donate the same product to someone in the third world for free, to an area without a power supply at all. Ours still work perfectly and if the power goes out I can even cook by the light, they are bright enough for that even. Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.

GQ We have a Baylis wind up radio with a solar panel and a 3 LED light torch built in.It is 5" long and 3"high,has AM and FM bands and we have had it for 3 or so years. It is very reliable and the sound is good too. We got it from E*ay and it was £20 ish. I've only wound it a couple of times as the solar is very efficient. It just stands on the window sill in the lounge and that keeps it charged. Lyn xx.

Well, I have another real life example of the wisdom of of doing preps. Unfortunately :(

It's OH's Sainsb*ry's pay day today, when we do our monthly food shop. However, we have just had to pay out over £500 for car repairs, and as OH is a driving instructor as his 'proper' job, the car is, unsurprisingly, a necessity. The saving grace is that, partly thanks to this thread, I still have lots of the basics in store and we can cut right back and only buy what's needed this time. Obviously, I'll have to make it up next time :D

Maybe my OH will listen to me next time I say "of course we need four boxes of tea bags, six tins of potatoes and all those cartons of chopped tomatoes" :rotfl:

:) Thank you both for the radio tips. You can never have too many tinned tomatoes and potatoes; the basics can see you thorough many an exciting culinary adventure.

I thought about cash today as went and got some from my bank after work (I don't bank with the ones affected by today's glitch). Probably not a good idea to run your walking-around cash right to the dregs in case something similar happens?

A pal of mine was at one of the UK's regional airports flying to another part of the UK at short notice on a family matter. He tried to use his bank card to make a shop transaction (no cash) and was declined. He rang them and was told that someone was trying to use his card at Blankety Airport so they'd frozen it as a suspicious transacation.

He told them it was him, he was at the airport and he was trying to use his card and could they blimming well un-freeze it now? He also told them the town of his destination, got there, tried to make a shop payment, card declined, rang them, repeated that it was him trying to use his card in
and could they kindly unfreeze it?! All that aggro to buy a few minor things, all of which could have been sourced with change from a twenty.................!

Plus I like TPTB not knowing every blessed place I go and every thing I buy..........once word of the tomato stash gets out across the interweb, I shall be a marked woman.
