  • That's the crux of the matter isn't it? being content with what you DO have and making the best life you can with it makes for a much better life. That's not to say that aspirations to improve your lot aren't a good thing and the knowledge that as individuals we all have a different interpretation of the 'perfect' life for us. We are what we are, not much you can do to change that and contentment comes with acceptance of that and the determination to make the most of what you can do with what do you have brings fulfillment and satisfaction.

I have thought that revolutions were inevitable with the current policies of many governments. In fact our government are expecting it with the recent purchase of water cannons. The only question is when and where will be next country to fall. You can tell the undercurrents are there by the surge in non main stream parties all across Europe.

Hello all, just catching up as usual. Bit of a SHTF scenario this morning when one of my chest freezers decided to give up the ghost. Unfortunately the other two were full and it was the one with the meat in it!!! Luckily full had space in one of his so panic over. I was faced with buying an overpriced new one not really the size I wanted or scouting everywhere for sh. Now I can take a bit of time and search out the best value one I can find.
As for whether my home would be my idea of perfect if/when I don't have to work I would say its pretty much spot on! Plenty of space/veg-patch/hens/ducks/sheep etc. The only thing we are thinking of is moving to a more rural farm, not on a mountain, that has the sun in the evening. Apart from that my place is lovely, also has a wood burner, and stove that runs off LPG plus plenty of candles and oil lamps.
I am so behind with my veg, only got a few squash and courgettes, runner,French and broad beans in. The greenhouse has toms,cu and chillies. Would it be too late to plant brassica seeds, thinking purple sprouting broccoli, kale, cabbages etc. Would it be better to buy plants? Anyhow its not raining here so I may have a go in the garden and tackle the jobs I have put off, not very prepperish of me!!!

What would be your ideal economic set-up, if you didn't have to work a day job? I'm not talking living in a tent in the woods eating mushrooms, since the amount of woods versus the amount of people in the UK is only every going to make it a minority lifestyle. Nor am I talking about life post-SHTF with a failed state and every person for themselves.

I'm talking about your choices in a recognisably-modern world with a mostly-functional economy like our own. What would you do? Where and how would you like to do it? Do you think your wishes are realistic and could remain viable as you age or perhaps commence family life?
I've got a beautiful little cottage in a beautiful location but I can see upcoming costs - the communal septic tank, the lane, the wall in front of our houses... Plus a couple of the neighbours bug me. The farmer was driving a thing with great big prongs which he stuck in a hay bale to shift it and I found myself saying 'I know someone I would like to do that to' (he has steered clear of me ever since :D). So I need a place where I can be as anti social as I want - the sort of place where you could dance naked in the garden and not upset anyone :rotfl:
Unfortunately my downsizing scope is limited to a canal boat (too cold) or a permanent 'mobile home site' (too restrictive, too risky and with nosy neighbours).
The preferred option is a property - be it ever so umble - with an acre or so for a small menagerie.
An extra £500,000 should cover it (don't all offer at once!)

I've just found the grand total of £1.28 in the bottom of my hand bag, and I am going to check the sofa cushions, will that help?;)

I've just ordered one of these, as I can't get to ikea to buy one of the lamps you have all talked about.
Has anyone else got one? The reviews on amazon are pretty good.

  • ... I've just bought a 12 LED battery lantern from Aldi.

    Price £2-99.

Won't be able to test it properly until later tonight, when it gets dark, but a few observations for now.

The unit seems fairly solid, and it comes with a dimmer switch, which isn't very linear.

There's a button compass in the, thankfully, removable top.

I'll report back, once I've tested it in the dark.

I would think a house boat can be very well insulated. If you get a boat that needs to be refitted then you can make sure that it is as warm as you want. Plus being small a wood fire will heat it up pretty well.
