I've never heard of diatomaceous (sp?) earth - but it sounds great, can you give more info?

and can I suggest for EOTWAWKI or even SCOMISFTWIBAT (slight changing of my immediate surroundings from that which I've become accustomed to) storing of the nitty-gritty comb, and as much proprietary lice or thread-worm-killer as you can lay your hands on. I have school age children - and am waging a constant (and barely successful) war against headlice and threadworm in an age of medicine, order and civil rest. Whilst neither of these infestations will directly kill you, they can make life bloody uncomfortable and deplete your personal reserves against serious infection.

Regarding DE good wiki article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth
basically its crushed bits of fossils and has a number of uses.

Yep big fan of the nitty gritty comb here as well :)

Even better if you are driving one of these.

Do I take it, that it comes with an Ipad charging adapter as standard?

Rather a lot of empty space, in that survival tin.

Also, I don't believe you will find a 1c stamp usable in the UK.

Yeah, I was going to ask about that. You couldn't even send a letter in the USA with a 1 cent stamp.

My survival kit? £4.20 in coins for a day bus pass, in case car is disabled.
  • About ironing, I can't say I'm a fan but I've read that in former times ironing was a way of getting rid of fleas and insect eggs and larvae from clothing. In a post SHTF world without modern detergents and automatic hot washes a thing of the past, or at least such things expensive and the luxury of the few, a good solid iron that could be warmed on a stove might be really useful in keeping your clothes free of creepy-crawlies and the holes that go with them. I'm keeping an eye out for one a boot sales and the like.

    Strawberry Report
From the frontline ..... delighted to report that my precious, gorgeous, cossetted strawberries are ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I have fed them, weeded, watered, fought the blimmin slugs and ants by all and any method, netted them, and tonight there were enough for a whole bowlful each, for OH and me. The really ripe ones are almost purple, and I've never tasted anything so delicious. They are Gariguette, an old French variety. Apparently you can buy them in Harrods .... If anyone is thinking of growing strawberries, go for these ones - they are truly wonderful.

The extra space is so you can customise it.

:) It's a brilliant wheeze; some people may have been stupid enough to fork over hard cash for that carpy little tin with a few bits & bobs in it. I should be marketing stuff like that to idjits.

I've been spending some random time, with the random post generator button, over at Mr Money Mustache. Although it's not a prepping site, it is about living frugally and moving towards 'financial independance', that happy state where you don't have to sell your time in a job. And there's lots on there about thrift, and many matters very OS.

I'd like to pose a question, if I may. OK, I'm going to pose a question, you can respond or ignore as you will.:p

What would be your ideal economic set-up, if you didn't have to work a day job? I'm not talking living in a tent in the woods eating mushrooms, since the amount of woods versus the amount of people in the UK is only every going to make it a minority lifestyle. Nor am I talking about life post-SHTF with a failed state and every person for themselves.

I'm talking about your choices in a recognisably-modern world with a mostly-functional economy like our own. What would you do? Where and how would you like to do it? Do you think your wishes are realistic and could remain viable as you age or perhaps commence family life?

One of the stimuli to this train of thought was a radio article I heard yesterday about people who were selling their homes in London at bubblicious prices and using this wealth to achieve escape velocity. Such as one couple whose £190k home had appreciated in price to £950k in the 18 years they had owned it. They were buying a house in (if memeory serves) Kent with 6 acres.

So, if you could have a total change of life, with your own escape velocity, what would you do an where would you do it? Would it be a prepstead somewhere? A nuclear bunker? A canal boat?

Mine would be a hobbit-style circular wooden eco-house in some woods on the edge of a reasonably-sized village. In southern England, or eastern England, because I'm a wuss who doesn't like being rained-on too much. Plus I've seen the size of the slugs in Wales and Scotland and they're horrific.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I'm up a hill in Scotland and I'm retired. I'm happy with this- the only change in the dream lifestyle would be better health so I could make use of my garden and keep chickens. When I was younger and stronger I was too busy working to do it :) I wouldn't want to move south because there's too many people and people scare me. You can stand on slugs but not on people :D
