In the case of allergies or dietary preferences, I never trust that a product won't have changed - its not the fastest way to shop, but it is safer. Thankfully we're omnivores with no allergies, so reading every packet is only when we are catering for friends/family.
(We have a mix of no aliums, no caffeine, no dairy, no fungi, no nuts, no gluten, no alcohol and no seafood, as well as vegan and vegetarian).

Very true. I'm allergic to potatoes and potato starch. These can be found in yoghurt, extra strong mints and even grated cheddar. They also change over time depending on what the cheap starch du jour is. Potatoes have gone up in price, so I can currently eat some soups which have been off the menu for a while (though cuppa soups are always no-go).

There's only one veggie stock that I am comfortable using too.

At home I tend to make from fresh, it's work lunches that cause issues as I'm not mad keen on sandwiches.

This is happening in Greece and could happen here if the banks fail again.

:) I'm often amused that about 50% of my salary goes straight back to my employer in payment for rent and council tax, so we could just do that with an I.O.U between council departments, since they're getting it back anyway.

As it is, I get to see it sitting in my bank account for a week, before it pings back to where it came from, and the residue is what I actually have to spend.:rotfl:

Barter can be more efficient than cash, simply because it robs The Grubbyment Beast of its fodder. When the tax man takes a gouge every time we buy or sell, our spending power goes down with each transaction as their take of our total wealth goes up. Whereas swopsies, of goods or services, can be very helpful. I'd be happy to trade some mending of clothes for someone skilled to trim my hair every 4 weeks. In fact, I really ought to see if we have a functional LETS scheme around here to do just that.

Archery was big fun with a lively crowd. The flatbow was turning a few heads as I'm the only person who shoots with one that class, so let a few interested parties have go. Teach has some flatbows and some regular longbows if people want to use them (a flatbow is a laminated 1920s modification of a traditional longbow, so its classified as a longbow but isn't what yer robin hoods would have been using, IYSWIM).

:D I got some golds (bullseyes). And some rubbish shots as well, but that target was getting a bit chewed up around the centre.

I LOVE archery. Me and a fair few others. It's great to see so many youngsters, especially pre-teen and teen girls taking it up. Fun for them, too, there's not many pastimes where an 8 y.o can out-compete an adult, are there? Plus we stop for tea and biccies half way through, there's no running around getting sweaty and no one makes you wear funny clothes with numbers on the back.

;) It's sport, Jim, but not as we know it.

I think that the real problem is that even if you are paid in kind you are still liable to tax on the benefits in kind. Which will have to be in cash. So if you have no cash then you could be in trouble. It makes getting back to normal even harder.

I have found a crossbow with safety catch and collapsible, but was wondering what the rules are on importing one?

I never really doubted it, but never post anything on Facebook anyway. As for my search engine searches I suspect that many others have similar searches. The same could be said for youtube subscriptions. The real problem is that there are incredible overlaps between say camping, prepping and SHTF scenarios. In fact there are some interesting solutions for preppers that are perfectly legitimate for campers.

  • Ikea have tealight lanterns for £2 each the cheapest I know of and thier pack of 100 tealights is still £2 and the quality is good too. I find that the ones from the pound shops and the candles too don't burn for as long or as well so don't buy from that source any longer. Ikea also sell a 45 hour pillar candle, plain white for £1.49, good value.

DD2 had a total dairy allergy when she was a baby which lasted until she grew out of it at the age of 7. She also reacted very badly to lots of additives, particularly colours. It was almost impossible to find a health food shop back then in the early 80s and the dietician gave a list of known 'free' foods available in the supermarkets. Only problem was that even then manufacturers were changing ingredients fairly often and not stating that on the packaging, it really was a case of every purchase considered had to have the ingredient list read every time I shopped. It took time but kept her safe and was worth the doing. I also cooked (still do in fact) everything from scratch but to do that you really have to be sure that the 'scratch' ingredients are safe and free from the components you react to. Life wasn't meant to be easy was it???

Those are really nice. £2 is great value. Unfortunately my nearest Ikea is about £15 in petrol away so don't go very often. I do get friends and rels to get my tealights for me though when they visit:o. Don't know I'd trust them to buy a holder for me though, I'd probably end up with something dayglo orange. Still, at least I'd be able to see it in the dark.

VIVATIFOSI look at the lanterns on line and see if you like the look of them, they come in different colours they definately have a cream one in at the moment, I've got some silver ones and I know they do some brighter colours too, all the same shape and the door to put the tealight in actually has a fastening catch and is part of the glass surround of the lantern and makes it easier to refill them with new lights when necessary.

The model is 'ROTERA TEALIGHT LANTERN' and still £2.

GARDENING QUESTION this morning I noticed sparrows on top of the netted redcurrants, I've seen them around that area before and looking closer I realised they weren't on top of the net but actually under it. I've never known sparrows try to take unripe fruit before, the currants are still rock hard and bright green and not likely to attract blackbirds who will take not fruit until they go red. Anyone else got odd sparrow behaviour this year??? I managed to chase them out of a corner of the net that I propped up on a pole so they're OK. I think we're going to have to invest in a permanent fruit cage or we'll miss out on a harvest and the raspberries too, very strange behaviour and not something I've seen before!!!

Free frugal cookbook download here (will be in US measurements).

She is crowdsourcing for print publication to start a buy 1 give 1 (to someone who can't afford it) movement, and only printing at all because some of the poorest people don't have access to digital downloads. It seems a worthy initiative.

Grrr, all the leaves of my runner beans have been eaten, I noticed this morning. My nematodes arrived last night, guess what I'll be doing today?!
