:) OK, I'm admittedly a nosy mare and you can just tell me to burger-off, but what are you two working on?

We could tell you - but we'd have to kill you :rotfl:

I'm testing and writing recipes for the Thermal Cooking Bag .... Greenbee is helping keep my nose to the grindstone.

So the writing is done - but it's pants!!! But I will go through it again tomorrow and make it miles better. I sound like Fanny Craddock and I was hoping for something a little less shrill :o

  • although if you aren't overrun with small children/animals and have a sturdy candlestick candles should be safe enough.

OTOH, one Hurricane Lamp, strategically placed away from the pedestrian route(s) is going to be safer (even without the inherent safety of Hurricane Lamps) than half a dozen candles, scattered around the room.

I do agree a hurricane lamp is a good option there could be many problems like fuel availability in a crisis. Candles also do not raise too many eyebrows if you are found to have them. A jerry can with 20 Litres of paraffin might be problematic. Everyone needs to find their own solution. If we all rushed out and got the same solution it could cause shortages of what people are looking for.

    :) Very true.

I won't do hurricane lamps due to the very small flat I live in, where there could easily be serious issues with air quality/ parafin fumes.

Also, the advantage of candles is that they are inert and will last for decades although they can melt into comedy shapes if exposed to heat in storage. Candles are widely available and many people use them as decorative objects, so their presence in the home doesn't scream prepper.

I buy and also make pillar candles, which are more stable than tapered candles. You can also amplify their light with the judicious use of mirrors. Indeed, I have a sweet little mirrored tealight holder, and will be keeping my eye out for more of the same.

I also have candle lanterns in several sizes, all in metal, and very stable, which mitigate some of the shortcomings of candles in respect of susceptibity to drafts. Plus plenty of things like metal trays to stand them on.

All forms of light have their pros and cons, and it's as well to have several ways of lighting, as well as several ways of resolving any other problem.

MG, thanks for satisfying my noseyness.;)

Yesterday I ordered a bunch of items from Approved F00ds and only afterwards realised that many of the items that I had remaining from the last order are perfect prepping supplies. Dried foods, like pasta meals or couscous which are light weight and long life could be very handy in an emergency. I bought a large amount of bread mix which only needs water so in many ways is another perfect prepping supply. I will need to think of how to bake in a SHTF situation.

I think I might do another order when suitable supplies are available. Also cheap for those on a tight budget.

I found searched on Knowledge Weighs Nothing; try putting 'hanging solar food dehydrator' into Amazon. There's a sort of mesh cabinet with hangind shelves. Very makeable, I would have thought.

I am planning a trip to the US one day and things like this which you cannot get here are perfect for the shopping list. So I have added it to my Amazon wish list as a reminder and will look into it closer to my trip. Who knows I could get one on eBay.

A delightfully-wacky character called Stuart Wilde pointed out that everything is on loan from the god force; it's here now, it may be somewhere else in the future. You can avoid a fair bit of stress if you accept that things aren't always where they used to be and what's yours now may not be yours in the future.

Par for the course once you have children. Then when they leave home you can't remember where you have put things (can't blame the kids now) or whose things they were/are, or even who you are, sometimes. Does that count as non-attachment and will it bring us closer to Nirvana?

We are getting very philosophical on here tonight aren't we?

    :D Ain't we just.

I've just had SuperGran on the phone from The Far Side (of Shoebox Towers). All hell in breaking loose over there thanks to the actions on one individual; a pesky alkie, junkie attention-seeking grade A pain in the derriere. SG is philosophical about it; she'll be making her cocoa and toddling off to bed soon.

If it kicks off, it kicks off. No point in lying there waiting for the other shoe to drop. My side of the Towers is presently being entertained by the football terrace style bawling from the student houses. On past form, it'll still be going on at 3 am. Speed the hour the Uni breaks up and they burger-off before the next batch arrive in the autumn.:p

Or I could just string my longbow and see if they're in range.........:rotfl:

ETA; my trajectory was a bit off but they're most definately in range over there. Oh happy day - twang!

I'm considering building an outdoor wood fired pizza oven back end of this year. Which would also work for baking bread (and other things). Still in the musing/planning stages at the mo, along with a cold smoker.

Sorry, playing catch up, so apologies for quoting posts from several days back. I have given my storage heater bricks away to a guy building one of these. He's been collecting them from local area on ebay and freecycle. Sounds like he'll have a phenomenal oven with very little outlay.
