MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »ALI I found a tutorial on you tube for making a wonderbox and looked at wonderbag pictures and descriptions on the web and just made it up as I went along. I had a piece of material 100% cotton and big enough to make a 40" circumference, cut two pieces the same size, found the exact centre of the circle by folding it and marked a circle the size of my le creuset pan + 1", sewed that first and stuffed it with the contents of an old bean bag my DD didn't want any more then finished the sewing to seal the circle. We then marked the rest of the circle into 8 equal sized segments and sewed them one at a time leaving 3" openings to stuff each segment and sewing them closed as they were finished. We then turned the edged in and made a tunnel in which we put some paracord to make the closure at the top. He Who Knows had some cord fasteners like you get on fleeces and we put one of these on the tied cord to keep the bag closed. The only other thing is a lid the same size as the bottom circle of the bag which is filled with beads then kept separate and put on top of the hot pot and its contents as you seal up the bag to cook your dish. It's a useful gadget. Hope that helps. Lyn xxx.
Thanks for this:)
I have some flat sheets that I got at T's years back for £1 which will now come in handy. Have saved these instructions for later when I get the beads and cord. I have a very old singer in the bottom of the wardrobe so this gives me the incentive to get it out and re aquaint myself with it.
Have ordered my Kelly Kettle this morning and it's already been dispatched :j Went for the base camp stainless steel with cooking set.
Can't wait to use it:D Have decided to try and get out a bit more this year for a few picnics and this will be just the job when we need a brew. Showed OH the demo vid and he was quite impressed. Have been going on about wanting one for almost 2 years, but other expenses always get in the way.
This is coming out soon and I shall be ordering it add to the set.
Has anyone used one of those fire steel things and if so was it easy and which one would you recommend. There's so many too chose from. I'm also confused with all the paracord options etc and some help in that direction would be useful.
My copy of A Guide to Survival Today On Next To Nothing, Thomas & Susan Hinde arrived today so looking forward to reading that this week. Although if Afterlight arrives I'll not be able to resist reading that first.
Hope everyone is enjoying the weather, I'm trying to psyche myself up to cut the grass, but it seems such a shame when the dandelions are so plentiful and colourful.0 -
SIEGEMODE I've got a little firesteel and flint striker which I've never been able to use on its own to get a blaze started. What seems to work for me is a piece of cotton wool or a cotton wall ball( 1/2 of one if you're being frugal) with a little smear of vaseline jelly on it, it takes the spark and lights very readily to get your fire going fast. If you're in prepper mode use the dandelions to make a salad, the young leaves are a little bitter but not unpleasant and you can use the yellow petals from the flower as part of a salad too, then you can cut the lawn with a clear conscience!!! Hope your wonderbag works out well, we made ours with an old hand crank singer that belonged to He Who Knows gran, does the job very well. Enjoy the weather too, just been up and watered in the greenhouse and polytunnel and it was georgeously warm! Lyn xxx.
If any dandelions escape and make seedheads, save and dry those too, one of the best ways to start a fire with a flint and steel is to strike the spark onto some fluffy type seeds like dandelion clocks or pampas grass, the fluff catches easily and the oil in the seeds gets a good hot flame going, win win situation really unless of course you're a dandelion!!!0 -
Unfortunately our dear moggy sees nowt wrong in peeing anywhere on our postage stamp patch of grass and our dearly departed moggies did the same along with a spot of digging. Therefore it's very uneven and a pain to cut and I can't consume the dandelions, but will let them grow and pick them to use as fire starters. They look so pretty from the kitchen window and I struggle to see them as weeds.
My singer is a handmedown and probably pre war, it's been in the wardrobe for the past 18 years so about time it earn't it's space. The old ones are so beautiful aren't they. I have nans first electric one too but that's in the loft as there's not enough space for it as . it comes with it's own table. Years ago I made all sorts. Although I haven't used them for many years I've never been able to let them go. Me a hoarder ? Never:rotfl:Just a keeper of useful things.0 -

You can also strip the peel from the stalks, and eat the pulp inside.
The Dandelion (along with the Barrel Cactus), is one of the few exceptions to the general rule, not to consume milky sap.
As for the roots, you can roast them and grind them, to make a coffee substitute.0 -
Random factiod; the dandelion derives its name from dent de lion (teeth of lion in French). Look at the sawtoothed leaves to get the idea.
It is also a diruretic so perhaps not ideal if you don't want to take the p.
Have been to work, home for a breaklet and then up on the allotmentino for a couple of hours. Blinking horrific sight; the bed I'd left immaculate 48 hours ago had been colonised by weedlings about 2 inches tall. Could barely believe my eyes.
I got the hoe out and showed 'em cold almost-razorsharp steel. They don't like it up 'em. Wielded the hoe with vim and vigour among the beans and the onions and the spuds. Have watered the seeds planted at the weekend (leek, beetroot, carrot) and used the grass clippers to tidy up a bit of the path. Too tired to do it all.Lots of people were up the lotties, a tea-time handover from the dayshift to the post work gardeners, lots of weeds being given the old heave-ho. It's heads down weeding, clipping and watering for the next several months. Nippy but bright and clear and sunny. A frost expected tonight, tatties are just peeping thru the baulks, so shouldn't be big enough to get nipped too badly.
I have eaten a meal, had two phonecalls incoming and one visitiod from a pal, have ironed for tomorrow and am as happy as a happy person. Gawd, but I love spring. The cow parsley, forget-me-nots and various other things are blooming and it's lovely.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thank you for asking, unfortunately Herself is still far from well, tomorrow sees the (hopefully) last set of hospital hurdles before final diagnostic tests.
Generally we're trying to keep the brown stuff below fan heightHoping all the poorly peeps are still recovering well
Beautiful day again today so lots going on in the garden just nipping out to the garden centre with OH *I must not buy any plants/herbs/shrubs/trees* .....:))
Did you succeed?
I'm not sure I'll get much planted this year - I'm behind as it is and still need to replace some fencing and try to eradicate the brambles that keep trying to take over the garden.0 -
Don't forget you can also use dandelion flowers to make a very potent wine - might as well have something to anaesthetise ourselves with if the zombies invade! One life - your life - live it!0
