  • Yes well the reports on the world news about the Greek riots...the truth is that 100,000 people turned up and demonstrated peacefully for a couple of hours. Some have not been paid for 18 months and others with families have been getting 600 euros a month for working 14 hours a day. The demonstrations were peaceful.

The young idiots throwing the petrol bombs started after the demo and there is evidence some of them were paid to do it. There is a photo here of them getting ready at the side of a police patrol and the police are ignoring them, the police are not even stood ready.

The 104 people arrested were mostly arrested as they waited for special trains to take them home........ it just goes to show how biased the news reports are and how much they like to show Greece having 'riots' again.

I wish they would show the old people having to take food out of Lidl's rubbish bins to eat in the winter and the people who have no medicines suffering because the government owe the chemists almost 500 million euros....

As I have said before WTSHTF is relative to your own situation not just major crisis. Sudden job loss, serious illness, benefits not coming through for months, loss of partner , need I go on. We are all prepping for various and different scenario's as are many many sensible people.

Even Prime ministers can find themselves suddenly out of work and homeless ...

Nobody is exempt from ending up one pay cheque from long term unemployment. 8 years ago I never dreamt I would end up in my situation but I did and am getting on with it :wall:

  • Hi 2TONSILS - I came up through the school of hard knocks too, none of it has been easy and I guess that you have been able to live your dream and be in Greece even if that is for a finite time, it's further than most of us get. I hope so much that you can continue to stay there and enjoy what sounds to me like a pretty idyllic life but, if you do have to make the hard decision on coming home you'll always have the memories and the fulfilment. Keep you both safe and keep in touch with us, we care Cheers Lyn x.
  • Thanks Lyn, our hope is that we can stay here as we own the house we live in and it took all our savings to buy it and a small mortgage on top. If we leave we will still have to pay the mortgage and taxes each month. Nothing is selling but even if the market was good we can't sell without all the payments being up to date. If we get even 300 euros behind with the payments they can seize the house and auction it.

It would leave us very short of money to survive in the UK to be honest so would be a last resort for us.

Sending warm wishes to all of you affected by bad weather and difficulties. 2tonsils your life in Greece makes incredibly interesting reading, even though it is all very sad.

I feel so lucky to have all I have, home, food, enough heat, clean water, clean (ish) air - as much as it can be, living in London. However I really see how quickly this balance could be upset by unforeseen (or foreseen but ignored) events, weather, energy failure, civil unrest etc...

So I really want to thank all of you who are teaching me so much on this thread. I don't post much because I access the Internet mostly via DH's iPad and typing in it is a right PITA! However I read all the posts with interest and always send silent good wishes when I read of someone having a difficult time.

Today DH drove me to the Turkish shop that sells 4 tomato tins for 99p, we got 96 tins, which together with the 16 lt. olive oil, loads of dry grains and cereals (oats, couscous, pasta) and pulses that I already have, I feel mildly prepared. Big gaps: bottled water, wind up torches and radio. But got water purifying tablets, a Kelly kettle, a woodstove and plenty of wood. I hope that if anything not too major happens we are relatively ok. Ah, and around 36 toilet rolls, plenty of tea and coffee, salt and seeds to sprout. Need more toilet rolls though, will order in my next AF shop.

Good night and best wishes to all x

Edited to add: Byatt I love your sig, have you met my family of origin by any chance? It describes them to a T!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Thank you for all the learning opportunities on this thread, have not read the last few pages as no internet since yesterday, this is from my phone.

To me this is a problematic scenario as I was going to do my food shopping, online banking, send out lots of emails with documents attached and do some research tonight. Had I known the problem was so severe I could have stayed in the library and used the internet there rather than coming home or I could have just gone out for the evening rather than thinking I will have a nice relaxing evening at home.

It's reminded me how dependent I am on the internet. Going to the bank during working hours and having to queue for ages and that's a normal day as oppposed to spending five minutes at home. And that's just one thing. Having a stock cupboard is useful here as then you don't have to worry about food for a while.

Also got a document the police were handing out out safety and it says don't keep extra cash at home, but what if there was problem with ATMs.

I am always half torn about cash at home, for safety reasons. Seriously toying with the idea of having a small safe built into a wall of perhaps the loft, or under stairs cupboard, a less likely place where burglars might not look!

My friend many years ago kept money in all sorts of places as her husband was a gambler. She would pin it to curtains inside the linings, put it in the freezer or the oven, and inside her tins of flour.
