Fuddle, check with the school(s) re their emergency evacuation plans, no point you rushing to the school if the kids have been evacuated to a safe place elsewhere. If the school has an emergency evacuation plan they should also have a plan to let parents know what's happening?

It would be interesting to hear how schools around the country are planning for emergencies and maybe would be reassuring for other mums reading here.

    Good point Rosie, :T

Ok, could we try another scenario now.. what about this one -
It's summertime in the city, and everybody is in their gardens or on balconies enjoying the sun. You live in the suburbs & are out in the back garden with the kids - hubby is away playing golf or fishing. You hear sirens and take no notice as there are always sirens in a city and you assume it's a fire.
The radio is on and you hear a newsflash - a fire at a chemical works has released poison gas and they want people to evacuate immediately. You take no notice because you don't know of any chemical works nearby. Then a loudspeaker booms out in the street, followed minutes later by a policeman who comes round the side of the house telling people they have minutes to leave the area, the wind is blowing the gas in this direction. He says you have 15 mins to get out of the affected zone, then he goes onto next door.
You're in flipflops, the kids are in shorts, the dinner is cooking, the breadmaker is on, the dog and cat are snoozing in the shade, hubby is away....
    What do you do?

If it were at all possible to stay at home I would use my duct tape to seal the doors and windows - shove a duvet up the chimney and wait it out as we would be comfortable here for a good couple of weeks :j

If I absolutely had to leave I would grab our half prepared BOB, (rucksack with babywipes, meds, plastic cups and paper plates, clean undies, hairbrush, colouring pens and paper) and fill with a few last minute items such as snacks and hit the road along with everyone else. I would do all this whilst checking out the weather forecast to see which way the wind is likely to blow and would be heading off in the opposite direction.

To save time going round turning everything off I would go straight to the fuse cupboard and trip the switch so everything went off :)

Remember to close the vents in the car or change it to re-circulate the air rather than pulling in fresh air!
  • FRUBALL - If you are intending to use a stove indoors to cook or heat don't seal all the doors and windows or you run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, better to have one you can open, close to where you are using the stove . Cheers Lyn.

I appreciate that schools may have an emergency policy but I would still go to get my grandchildren.
Their parents work over twenty miles away and I would be unable to get to them without a car whereas the children are ten minutes walk away. At the same time they would be demented if their children were not with family in an emergency situation.
I would pick up the kids and at least I would have supplies which someone has pointed out schools may not have. I realise that there will be a designated shelter for evacuees and I would head for that.
Assuming we can contact others by phone, we have various family in the area who will lend a bed for a short while. So those of us not allowed into the area would be ok.
We no longer have a dog but I would have found it very hard to leave one of ours behind.:(

    Box is only about 4" x41/2" x 1"

Small enough for a B.O.B. And yes I bought one :D

Unfortunately my doctor will only prescribe 28days of my life saving tablets at a time. If stocks ran out before prescription renewal I am in the sticky stuff.

Meds are a worry, I was thinking of ordering Oh's script a few days early every month so I can get a stash, they are well selaed and would last a while - note to self check if they have dates on them.

I like the stove Meme, cheap and a handy back up. Will also check the sell by date on bottled water next time I am in the supermarket, if its a long date its worth it.

This thread is supposed to help us prepare so we can not get stressed. Its like insurance, you forget about ti but its always there for when you need it so people think of it as getting ahead of the game.

thanks for that, I thought it would have long dates, we don't use it much but can use it up when it gets near its dates and replace it as we go. Must get the pantry more organised so I can see where I am upto.

I bought a solar phone charger but it wasnt very good so if anyone gets one will you let us know how it goes, they are handy anyway.

Well, after much research...over several weeks I have decided on this for a phone charger http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007VN3GQY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

It's manageable price wise, but I promise when I get it I will let you all know if it's any good or not! I have been wanting an extra way to charge my phone, as it runs down very quickly and have considered a car charger etc, but want something whilst I'm on the move, travel a lot (locally but very rural) with my business and my big fear is my battery will die when most needed.

I have tried one of those cheap mini battery chargers on two different phones and although it says it's charging, makes no difference whatsoever.

Anyway, will give it a try and write a scathing review on Ama£on if it's rubbish.

meme, thanks for tip about A£di, I might get one if they still have them when I visit, a round 50 mile trip, so can only go when I'm doing anything else. Do we only drive for business now rather than pleasure?
