I was just thinking the same VJ's Mum (although I got an F in Economics A level due to a triple lesson on a Friday afternoon and being allowed to fall asleep in class ...).
It all sounds majorly suspicious. I'm at a loss to know what I can do about it though.

But can someone please explain, in [STRIKE]idiots[/STRIKE] laymans terms, what a derivative is? Cos I am really struggling to understand it. I know, me, with my grade D in A level economics too!

I think that's the point. You're not supposed to understand them. I used to work in financial publishing, edited a book on derivatives and STILL don't understand them.

I know that there are futures, forwards, options and swaps. I have a feeling that they can be closely compared to some of the offerings you might find in your local betting shop...

We have not had the heating on for most of the winter because even after spending hundreds of pounds on the boiler repairs last year it does not like running the heating and switches itself off. There is also a leak in another valve:(

I put a small convector heater in the hallway on low and that has stayed on all the time. We have gas fires downstairs so the room we use all the time is well heated. The hall heater just helps to prevent that cold blast when you open the doors. Upstairs we left the dehumidifier on all the time and that had helped too. Our room is the coldest but I take a hot water bottle to bed so ok in there too.

The up side of this is that there is very little mould in the bathroom and none in our bedroom.

The food storage seems fine too. I have asked one of gs to help me go through and tidy all stocks in the half term. He is small enough to get to the end of under stairs cupboards and he loves tidying up. He is not a child who spends much time on computers being a very active person. I only keep tins and jars in the farthest part of those cupboards, all packets are on high shelves in the largest area nearest the doors.

I'm just reading that hat4uk post ... I agree with the worldview, I just hadn't put it all together ... seems like we've got some bad stuff about to go down.

Derivatives, I *think*, are just different financial products that aren't based directly on the supposed value of the thing they're about, e.g. you can buy shares in a company directly, or you can use a derivative to take part in its rise/decline by betting points with a spread bettor, which is a derivative. Thats relatively straightforward, but there sounds like there's dozens of derivatives, that get more and more complicated (on purpose), and I can't tell you anything about those.

Just joining in the injections thing - when I had my cats, one of them became diabetic, and I was taught by the vet nurse how to give injections to her - she had me practise first on an orange, she said that came really close to the textures I could expect!

Just been watching those poor people having to abandon their homes by that railway line. The media keeps referring to the collapsed railway line or repairs to the railway line etc etc but the primary problem is the disappearance of the land beneath it!
My home could easily be in the situation of those houses and listening to one woman saying she had just 20 minutes warning to get some stuff together, made me realise I really do need to get my *rse into gear and get that bob sorted.
Took the dog out around midnight last night in horrendous conditions and suddenly realised I was walking through a mini torrent of water pouring down our lane. Never seen that before just here.
Sunny here today but reportedly at least two more storm systems on the way. There is just no end to it. :(

An interesting discussion about the Somerset Levels here

as I found weevils in one bag of flour here yesterday and had to throw it away.
What are you thinking of? It's extra protein!
On our African travels we found weevils in some bread we had bought. We ate it anyway. Hadn't seen bread for ages
