Preparedness for when

I am planning a camping holiday to Tromso in Northern Norway for a few weeks in the winter in a couple of years. It can get down to -60C near there so I am planning what to take. Keeping warm plans are pretty advanced as are the cooking plans. I will be taking lots of dehydrated meals, which I plan to prepare myself so not too expensive. Only need to work out solutions to recharge the camera batteries and keep the camera from freezing.
It is the toilet situation that is going to be tough. What do bears do in the woods? In winter? It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -

What do bears do in the winter? Go to sleep in their caves. Norway is nice in the summer.0 -

Good advice, but may I suggest Goretex or similar rather than just waterproofs. I've ended up seriously wet inside waterproofs from sweat condensing on the waterprrofs and soaking back through the layers. As for being a good investment, my current set are around 15 years old and still going strong.

I was in B&M the other day, and they haven't got any camping stuff on display.
I think it is probably a seasonal thing, but that doesn't help anyone looking for one right now.
Anyway, I've had a Google (I enjoy a good Google), and have found one on Amazon for £10, with free UK delivery.

According to the advert, they only have one left in stock, so, if that one has gone, there's another one for 38p more.
I know. Shock, horror. A full 38p extra.

I can vouch for how good portable camping stoves are. Many years ago when our kitchen was out of action for three months i cooked on one day in day out.
Sometimes the mechanism could be a little stiff when putting in the gas canister and I'd struggle a bit, but then I'd rather it was a tight fit than loose.0 -

They hibernate I think, a rather drastic way for them to avoid pooing on snow
I'd love to go to Norway. I wanted to go as a child after seeing pictures of the fjords in summer in a travel brochure. Caravanning in bognor never seemed the same after that.
Hubby however doesn't like cold holidays. If there isn't sun and sand in his cracks it's not a holiday. I'll get there one day.0 -
I've been to Norway but in summer. Even then it was pretty cold at night.
There was somebody (Fuddle?) looking for flashlights some pages back. I've just noticed that this torch:
www.amazon.co.uk/Gerber-Grylls-Intense-GE31-001794-Torch/dp/B00B0BCUNS/
which I got in a sale a while ago is back down to about 20 quid again:

Despite the daft "survival" packaging and picture of BG looking [STRIKE]rugged[/STRIKE]muddy it seems to be quite a good torch with variable high intensity (dazzling) and low intensity for longer battery life. Oh, and it's waterproof more or less which could be useful. Obviously you can get cheaper torches but this looks like it could take a bit of a battering without falling apart, which is more than I can say of the 50p torches I picked up in T3sco last year for the kids :rotfl:
I'd love some good goretex waterproofs but they are pretty pricey which is not an option for me at the moment :sad:0 -

Also, you don't necessarily need goretex because each walking company will have their own waterproof and breathable face fabric. My favourite pair of overtrousers are Berghaus AQ2's that are their own fabric.
For example, Haglofs have their own fabric called 'Proof' which is waterproof and breathable.
Also, there's another fabric that's more breathable than goretex but slightly less waterproof called eVent.
