So those of you who are more experienced at outdoorsy things than us, what do you reckon we would need?

How about a Goretex Bivi Bag?

I got the 1m x 1m fire blanket from Amazon. It seemed more practical as a long term solution than a fire extinguisher for me.

Thank you for this suggestion, I really didn't think of it.

My fire extinguisher in the kitchen is just about to go out of date and I wasn't relishing the thought of shelling out for a new one, yet again.

Hopefully a fire blanket won't have an expiry date.
  • To my mind, the only good that could come out of power cuts, is if it makes more people think about prepping.

:T Definately with you on that one. We happy band who remember the fun and games back in the seventies don't necessarily trust the elastic trickery to stay on.

Which reminds me, have Tues off and muvva coming to visit and I promised her I'd show her the butane stove in action. She's intruigued and will probably end up with one, when she's seen how good they are.

  • Since you mentioned the single burner gas stove, I have some bad news on the subject.

I was in B&M the other day, and they haven't got any camping stuff on display.

I think it is probably a seasonal thing, but that doesn't help anyone looking for one right now.

Anyway, I've had a Google (I enjoy a good Google :) ), and have found one on Amazon for £10, with free UK delivery.

According to the advert, they only have one left in stock, so, if that one has gone, there's another one for 38p more.

I know. Shock, horror. A full 38p extra.

That's a really sensible idea. It's something I could use afterwards, so would be worth the cash. I am probably being daft in that it seems like cheating, as the idea is to see what it is really like to be homeless and sleep rough. However, I can't imagine I'd be serving the cause by freezing myself solid that night.
  • Hollyberry you could always donate some of your stuff to a homeless shelter after you've used it - there's never enough to go around.

    Great idea, WCS.

I've printed off the relevant page on the website of the shelter in question so that I know what they need as donated items. I definitely have a lot of kitchen goods that can go into starter packs for people going into new accommodation, so it will be great to see that go somewhere useful. :D

Just quickly de-lurking to add that we have a couple of these as our house is electric-only. We tried to order some gas canisters from amaz0n recently, but had our order cancelled as the courier wouldn't deliver them! Something about being in a high risk area in the middle of nowhere in County Durham!! We eventually bought some from GoOutdoors, as well as a gas powered heater, just in case.
ETA The only times we have used the camping stoves, the electricity was timed to come back on just as we were sitting down to eat our lovely hot food and a steaming hot cuppa. Also we bought a camping kettle for boiling water for our (essential) cuppas.

Good call. I will see if any gardening mates have some we could borrow. I'm still a gardening novice here, so my stash of extras is a bit sparse. Failing a bit of borrowing, I'll go for the big cushion in a bin bag approach. ;)

I think I got mine off eBay or Amazon, dirt cheap. Though you will be able to get them from the supermarkets or a DIY store or garden centre soon enough.
