My advice Gwendolyn, would be to get one of these.

You can get them for about £9 (depending on brand and supplier), and they run on cheap 220 gram, disposable gas cartridges, which can be had for as little as £1 each.

The stoves are far more stable (but much bulkier) than the "burner on top" type camping stoves, but the bulk won't matter at home.

They cook more like a domestic gas stove (even heat spread and highly controllable heat settings), than a camping stove.

For true luxury, you can even get a double burner version, which runs on the same cheap 220 gram, disposable gas cartridges.

They even have Piezo ignition.

Sure it's not a miniature plague of locusts, GQ?
:D The thought had crossed my mind!

Was in the hospital clinic from 07.30 until 4.40 pm, but got lucky when leaving and there was a bus standing waiting and got home at 5.30 pm. Long old day. I was supplied with a turkey sammich, a peach melba yoghurt and the use of a tea machine. All was well.

I also finished Maggie Gee's The Flood which I can commend to you and am about to start Stephen Baxter's Ark, and blow me, if when I foraged in the magazine pile at the clinic their wasn't a Nat Geo mag with a cover article about the menace rising sea levels and more storms pose to major coastal cities around the world.

    Bit whoo-whoo, don'tcha think?

Have been disconnected from the news for about 24 hours but I heard rumours of foul weather incoming, so hope that everyone will tuck themselves up tightly. It's fine here atm, but who knows how long that will last?

:D It's very nice to NOT have that cannula in the crook of my elbow now. I am down 35ml of the red stuff so have had to eat the last two h.m. truffles to restore myself to whatever passes for normal.

Totally agree that the news is very poor. I'm regularly disappointed by the stories selected for coverage. I mean, nothing against Nigella personally, and I'm sure it was a beggar being a witness in that trial, but does Radio 4 need to do a big feature on her talking to ABC network in the US about how upsetting it was? After all, there are serious things going on in this country and abroad that we need to know about and a celeb's upsets shouldn't be a major story on a serious radio news prog.

fuddle, smiling at your realisation that we do have severe weather here in the south, it's not all the whining of softies. You drive safe on those wet roads, y'hear?

gwendolyn, those stoves like Bob has pictured are little darlings and as good as a regular gas burner. Neat and tidy to store, ditto the gas bottles. Highly recommended.

Righty, better get the supper on. If groceries run low, at least I know where there is a source of fresh protein just jumping around.:p

  • I've heard soldiers say, they long for the chance to be tested in combat.

I'm wondering if any of the "survival troops" on this thread, long for the chance to be tested in a SHTF situation?

If yes, I'm thinking it'll be some of the younger ones, rather than the old hands, who were blooded back in the 60s and 70s.

 Hey, check this out, the IMF has been discussing confiscation of 10% of people's net wealth in this document from Autumn 2013.

    http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/fm/2013/02/pdf/fm1302.pdf

    See page 49.

:p Hmm, that's gonna be about £26.90 from me, then.

Honestly, when the talk about springing it on people quickly to negate potential evasive action, they obviously haven't been hanging out with the preptastic tin hat section of the popluation.

ETA Bob, I'm not a fussy eater. We didn't have fussiness in our young day, did we? You bliddy well ate what you were given or went without.

ETA: I think you may have missed the joke there GQ.

:p I thought it was a pretty good joke, actually. And the beggars in our national and local gubbermint have already got a darned sight more than 10% of my gross salary. If they were content with 10% between them, I'd be quids in and laughing.:p

GQ, does that mean if I'm overdrawn I get 10% debt relief? (Hah, just kidding - I already know the answer, and it's something along the lines of "I should cocoa, sunshine".) If it's any comfort, I think the govt has already gone down the route of inflating its way out of debt - the rate prices are going up, the national debt will be worth about 37p in old terms. You may get to see the equivalent of your Zimbabwe (was it?) squillion dollar note with the Bank of England's name on, the rate we're going... wait, I'm sure one of my resolutions for this year was to be cheerful... busted already!
  • It was a 100 trillion dollar note.

    I've got one, along with a 50 trillion, a 20 trillion, and a 10 trillion dollar note.

QUERY!.......................got quite a few cheeses today ys they encased in wax so will need to be cracked open to be eaten , question is how long will these keep edible, see I was under the impression they would last for ages but date on them says mid jan thanks for any replies I ill pop back later to see if anyone can help me xxx
Not sure what kind of cheese it is, but if you keep them in the fridge, then a lot longer than January, because they're completely sealed off. Some cheeses get better when left to mature, others are less good, but you'll know when you crack them open if they've reached a level of maturity that you're not prepared to deal with. I've eaten those little waxed Wensleydales at Easter, that were bought at Christmas. If it's Cheddar, it'll probably still be OK next Christmas. You can experiment over the next few months, it'll be exciting:rotfl:
