Glad to hear that you've turned the corner, ALI, and hope the next few days see a full recovery.
Some rellies of mine did turkeys on their small-holding two years running. First year they had these all-white turkeys which are apparently what most of the commercial ones are. She said that they were the stupidist fowls she ever came across, literally didn't have the wit to get in out of the rain. The following year they had those Black Norfolks, or whatever they're called, and they had a much more natural way of behaving.
Was looking at pictures of those poor people from the Apollo and thinking back to those scenes from 9/11 and recalling that dust masks are listed as useful things for emergency preps. I have some of those wadded gauze types, the ones which you put on a metal frame and are held on with elastic.
Thinking of taking one from the DIY supplies and adding it to the EDC bag. Wouldn't be foolproof but every bit of dust and muck you could keep out of your airways would be better than nothing.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well I'm back - absolutely exhausted! The SNO concert was fantastic, but the people! everywhere!!
I went into the biggest supermarket i've ever seen and to be honest it all felt a bit obscene - just thousands of people buying trollies full of stuff. A total contrast to the homeless people sitting in the streets under blankets - so so sad. Really concerning also that the supermarket is only closed christmas day - when you people get a break? it's even open new years day. I do wonder how we've got to a point that we cannot manage to do our shopping in the other days of the week and give the shop-keepers a day off with their families.
Still, I bought some wool in the market of course, tea in Braithwaites and some lovely cheese from an indy cheese shop. I am so happy to be home.

That's what I thought Mar - and yes, that's me till the same time next year! I'm going to make a careful list for next time I go, make sure I make the most of it and don't have to do it too often!!!
I did realise that the only thing I can't really get here is decent tea and decent cheese - was lovely feeling all the yarn though! Sure makes me appreciate the peace and quiet I have here, and the really low levels of consumerism.

There was a hobbycraft across the way that I kinda fancied a look in, but it was heaving so didn't bother - maybe next time eh??0

Yes, having kept most fowls over the years except for exotic things like guinea fowl, turkeys are definitely the dimmest, though as GQ says, the older breeds are less intellectually challenged than the hybrids. Ducks are pretty dim as well, bless them. The kids used to reckon that ours had one brain cell between them and they all had to do exactly what the one whose turn it was to have it was doing :rotfl:. If you watch a bunch of domesticated ducks you will see just what they meant.
Chickens are probably the brains of the fowl world to be honest, but even they vary. We used to rear a few of the commercial meat ones at one time, and they would rival turkeys in the brainless department
People don't like to think of them living in cramped conditions, but even though ours had an outside run they could go into, they rarely did, and if they did happen to find themselves outside (how on earth did that happen:rotfl:) they didn't move around and scratch the earth for worms etc like the 'ordinary' egg type chickens, but just sit there, even if it was pouring with rain, and I would eventually have to go pick them up and put them back in.
Geese are supposed to be clever, but I have always found them to be aggressive and noisy, rather like obnoxious, oikish people of the type who are rarely very bright. Some people love them, but I am not a fan.
We just have 4 ordinary brown chooks now.0 -

What do you say if someone's car is obstructing the service ramp?
'Will so and so please move his car off the service ramp, or security will conduct a controlled explosion'?0
