Welcome AnimalTribe always good to have new peeps on board.

Daz we should be celebrating - one big debt paid off  low sugar beer of course ( is there a beer suitable for diabetics? ) so have you plans on how to use the money that was going on payments? or are you just going to blow it on the high life - diet coke and beans :D

Off to part ex my Dyson vac for a re-con one. I can strip, clean and re-assemble a dyson faster than a soldier does a gun but bits have broken off and cant be glued, duct taped or stapled back on so its time to go :(

Yaay Daz well done on the loan pet, a big weight off you eh? Re BS my hubby finds that taking cinnamon with anything sweet really helps keeps the numbers down. That and smaller helpings.
Hi AT and welcome. They're all a wee bit odd in here. Apart from me, I'm ok ;)
Can anybody see even a tiny remote chance of me stashing sweeties for the SHTF?? :D

Daz, is there any way you could change to a credit meter?

I would hate to have to regularly go out in the cold to pay for my utilities. Also, if there was a breakdown in the payg system, you may find yourself cut off, even though there is gas available to use.

    Hi
I’ve been reading this thread for a while on and off. I’ve found it very interesting and informative. I started reading at post 1, but still haven’t gotten through to the end. I hope it’s OK if I join anyway (even if I’m not up-to-date on the discussion).
So long as you learn the secret handshake (with rolled up trouser leg nat) and pass the qualifying test of having at least a dozen out of date tins of baked beans :D

Re charging for green waste, I can see that from the outside looking in, it appears an outrageous impostion of the LA onto the householder. From the other end, it looks like this; green waste is bulky and goes into landfill. Landfill taxes are high. LAs are cash-strapped in a time of rising costs and frozen or near-frozen council tax, along with the millions which central government have stopped giving them each year. How do you pay for it?

I thought the point of recycling and green waste is to AVOID stuff going into landfill. In our area there is a large composting/recylcing plant where the garden/green waste is turned into compost, it also produces some energy in the process. They give out compost every so often for free and also community groups can have some delivered-again for free. The rest is sold. We now can add various veg peelings and food waste-eggshells/teabags etc to the garden waste as well. Obviously most of our waste goes in our own compost bins, but its handy to know.

So that's how you pay for it, you get a joint partnership with a private recycling company and help them to invest in a recycling plant, which then become self funding and takes all your green waste for free. At least that's how they did it here.

Seems crazy if green waste is going in landfill, what is the point people recycling then?

To be fair tho this plant has been up and running for quite a few years, I suspect a council now might struggle with up front costs, no matter how big the later savings are.

When our last dyson went to the bin heap in the sky (it was our third and all were second hand given to us lol) we decided to go for a "henry" hoover. There is a reason all the cleaning type companies use them. Its pretty simple and all the parts can be replaced for not a lot. We got a "hetty" as the kids love pink lol and it has been going strong for about 5 years now with no problems. Worth considering as an alternative as my mum didn't like her last Dyson and said it wasn't as well buildt and solid has the earlier ones.

Although some people will prefer a hoover you push around rather than one with a pipe you pull around lol.

Well finally reached the end of the thread and caught up.

    It moves so fast lol.

OH pretty busy at the moment both with various odd jobs and his IT work as well. Got a new ad coming out in a local free magazine which will go out to 5000 homes and businesses next week so hopefully he can earn quite a bit in the run up to Christmas. Won't be spending too much on crimbo stuff, but will probably invest in items to fill the stock "shed" up so we can avoid much shopping in Jan.

Had a fab night on the 23rd watching Dr Who 50th in 3D on the big screen. Was a real communal atmosphere where everyone was really happy and friendly and we all laughed and reacted in the same way, really lovely. I gather from other forums it may not have come across as well on the small screen, but as DW fans giant Daleks shooting out of the screen at you and even exploding out of the screen at you was a sight not to be missed lol.

Glad we went as it turned a programme into an experience for us, plus it was nice to get out together as a couple. It was our anniversary treat for next week as well :). 16 years of marriage and in early Jan 17 years of living together. We actually knew each other as friends for about 4 years before that so pretty much half our lives together, where does the time go lol.

Finally qualified and started work for Leapforce as a web page evaluator so will get a part wage in December and full month in January. Hoping to use the cash for various stuff around the house and preppy items.

You naughty lot with your wood burners are making me so jealous. Got other stuff which needs to get done more urgently, but the wood burner is defo on the list for this year. There are a number of places we can get cheap or free wood so hopefully should save us some cash on heating.
