yes religion was the opiate of the masses.... now its x-factor
TV in general. And FaceAche and (Half)Witter and all that crowd, ad nauseum.
Most people know little or nothing about history, politics, economics or social movements, and they don't want to know, either. They don't pay a blind bit of attention to what the government is doing to their detriment until it's too late.
If I had a penny for every person who has been done-down by the Bedroom Tax and ranted in my earhole and, when suggested that they take this up with the MP, told me THEY DON'T VOTE - well, I'd be a rich(ish) woman.
If you're gonna opt out of leading a responsible adult life, which includes paying close attention to what those devious barstewards in Lunnon Town are plotting, then don't be surprised when you get treated with contempt and sold down the river.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I do kind of get where Russell Brand is coming from though. They are a load of lying cheating bar stewards who are only out for themselves and It is getting harder to vote for any of them. I don't necessarily agree with him, but I can see what he means. However, he is also a supremely intelligent, articulate man - and very rich, which I guess sets him apart from the masses.I wanna be in the room where it happens0

Yeah, let's call a general strike, risk getting dismissed or don't get your pay and see who blinks first, the populace or the government.
Most people are supine in the face of political iniquity, in my experience. They'll beyatch and whine but will do beggar-all about it.
Keepin' it real, GQ xx
I don't know if you still notice this in local government GQ, but it used to annoy me when NALGO called a strike, only about half of us union members stayed off work. Those working (and the non members) were quite happy to accept the wage raise we achieved though, at no cost to themselves. I always thought they should have received the lower offer that we had rejected.

Also, a 4 pack of 2900mAh, Ni-Mh, AA rechargeable batteries.
Is 2900mAh the highest you can get, in AA rechargeables?
Also, a couple of Ni-Mh, rechargeable, PP3s.
You can get 3200mAh rechargeables, I've been using them for a couple of years for my camera. They perform well in the short term, but don't hold their charge well over a few weeks. (I keep Duracells in the camera case for the times when I'm not doing intensive photography work)Raise our eyebrows and tut?
Seriously? I think there would be actual riots, I can't imagine people watching their savings being wiped out to counteract others who have spent freely being alleviated of those debts. That is a different thing to a "haircut" on savings accounts.
I work in the building industry, and it is a free for all when a contractor goes bust without paying people for many months - those suppliers and subbies converge on sites trying to get their money back from something - anything. to the point of trying to dismantle the partly built building. if people have their savings raided to counteract others' debts, they will go to some extreme to get something back. Looting shops, nicking your neighbour's car that you know he got on credit that has now been wiped.
Can't see it myself. It would have to be a last resort and there would be many (probably empty) promises for repayment. TIme for pockets in the mattress methinks.
I suspect they'd have to turn Westminister into a fortress - or MPs could be decorating lamp posts.
What I doubt they'd do is wipe out debts, there may well be a staged reduction in the value of currency, but debts would become subject to punitive interest rates rather than the same revaluation - particularly in secured debts which are harder to walk away from.0 -
I agree nuatha, the rich will walk away virtually unscathed but the rest of us will be hit by huge interest hikes on mortgages, loans and credit cards. All they will be looking to fix will be the ponzi schemes that are the basis of banking in the world.
Better to try to pay off debts and put your money into things like food and seeds rather than in the dodgy banks.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Not a happy burrefry today :(The living room looks like a tip because DH has opened up the fireplace ready for the stove to be fitted and we are really gutted because the stove we ordered is too big and is not going to fit without taking out the lintel and fitting a new one, that is not a job that DH feels qualified enough to do, we phoned the company yesterday so they know about it, and we have to go and take the measurements down to them and choose a smaller stove on the way back from the hospital tomorrowBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Sorry been trying to catch up...
talking about the reactors in Japan...was having a conversation in work on Friday... (ok someone telling me how bad it is, and how it is not being in the news like it should be) he was saying its just a time bomb waiting to happen..
I the SHTF and it went pear shaped there, what is the potential outcome for everyone???
I might be totally over reacting here, but one of my thoughts were is the sea being contaminated ? not only around japan, but travelling further afield if so, does that mean some of the fish we eat is radio active??? what food do we import from the surround areas, islands that potentially might have a small amount of the stuff on/in it??
Also ..I know in the scale of things this is not important:D but I am prepping for price increases etc.. 630ml fairy liquid is only 70p in A$$$DA at the moment.. (£1.60 in T's) I am stocking up.. one normally lasts me a few months ( I normally fill the sink with hot water as I am cooking etc so all dirty plates go in straight away..which saves on WUL) bought 2, so might go and buy another 20 tomorrow..:rotfl:Work to live= not live to work0 -
Thanks for the heads up on that CTC , I'll try to get over to our local one early in the week and stock up, that is a really good price.
If anyone doesn't know about it there is a very sensible blog by a lady called 'FRUGAL QUEEN' I try to read every day and she has put up the most sensible feet on the ground post I've seen for a very long time relating to christmas in 2013, well worth a read if you've the time and the inclination Lyn xxx.0 -

will try and find the blog, and check it out...
was just wondering, if our scotish friends had any more fab tv programmes this week:D, as I totally loved the off grid one, and the reduce energy challenge...Work to live= not live to work0 -
CTC, re Fukishima, that's a really good question, I hadn't really thought beyond it being worrying in and of itself but hadn't made the connection as to how it could impact us.
I'm getting a ghillie kettle for ChristmasMy mum is getting it for me and I'm going for the 1.5L one with the little cook set so we can heat up soup etc. So happy
Going to start stock piling / prepping fuel for it; we have a load of decking which burns really easily which we have been using on the fire, I'm going to split some of that and collect pine cones etc to dry out. Any other suggestions?0
