True.
It is good to be prepared for "likely" scenarios and things we can do something about but there is no point in worrying about things that we can do nothing about, that is just wasted energy.0 -
Like others, I'm all for being prepared (storecupboards, first aid, etc) and have found this thread useful for ideas in events such as snow, power cuts etc but can't help but feel some of the latest posts just border on scaremongering and actively looking for things to worry about.

Wow, this thread has really stepped up a gear today! Serious end of the world stuff being talked about now. I had no idea there were so many impending natural disasters to whip ourselves into a fenzy about.
Don't be worrying HJ, I'm firmly fixed in paracetamol's and spare glasses in my handbag... no end of the world scenario in my neck of the woods. Don't blame you for bowing out though, some days I don't read either.0 -
Before my own updates I will add these comments.
Hope you enjoy your holiday in Greece. Most tourists will not even notice that things are hard here, the sun is still hot (actually, very hot) and the Greeks will welcome you with open arms. There is a chance that you might get a heavy shower of rain while you are here as it is September but within minutes the weather will be hot and sunny again.
Its worth packing a cardi or light jackets as the evenings can start getting a bit cool at this time of year (between 17 and 24 at night at the moment)...its still 34 in the shade in the daytime.
You could always bring pounds and change them to euros when you get to Greece. The banks here give better exchange rates than most that are available in the UK.Many resort office and hotels exchange at good rates, some with no changeover fee. Some owners might well take payment in pounds so take a calculator with you....
To get the best deals with food , ask the locals where THEY eat....they will often recommend a little out of the way spit grill (barbecued on charcoal) and believe me the food will be amazing value and top quality....even if they have no tablecloths on the tables.
If you have an EU health card then make sure you bring it with you as it covers you for emergency treatment. If you have to go private you will have to pay for the treatment and then claim it back from your insurance company.
Now on to my updates. I have had another of my complaints to the EU upheld and got a really nice letter from them thanking me for complaining to them. I complained that the Gre*k govern**nt were going to start charging a luxury tax on solar heating panels that people had already installed on their property. The EU are going to block them doing this!!! Great news as we were thinking of getting it done for hot water until we heard we were going to be taxed on it. HOnestly, you couldn't make it up could you?
Had a good day today after getting the letter from the EU. Went to the gym on my scooter (saving petrol lol) and had a good workout. I work there four hours a week in exchange for my membership and one for my husband so that works out well. I realise I need to stay as fit as possible and I am nice and strong through lifting the weights regularly. Now its cooling off in the mornings and evenings I will be going back to the power walking and kickboxing.....all this at 56, soon to be 57 LOL...I love it!
Went to our local buy whatever you like store and forgot to pick up a whistle like I intended to do. In this country people will come running to see what is going on if you blow a whistle as the police use them. One long blast is to stop you, two to stop you dead and its the last warning, after the third they draw the gun..... I was going to put it on my keys which are always on me.
Suburbanwifey I am pleased you followed up my suggestion about the protein powder. It makes great emergency protein, it can be mixed with water or milk to make a shake, fruit for a smoothie or even yogurt and fruit as a pudding.....when its mixed like that its so good it tastes like something you should NOT be eating LOL........it makes amazing muffins if you add one scoop of the powder to the cake mix before you bake it. You can even mix it with cream and roll it into balls and keep it in the freezer....its just like ice cream only nicer!
Just used some banana protein powder to make muffins for putting in portions in the freezer..even gluten free they were light and fluffy and moist. Good job I am putting them in the freezer rather than eat the lot now.....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Haribojunkie....I am a member of many underground Gre*k sites and political update ones here and they are being monitored. My friends on there are having the same problem. There is an article out today telling you what keywords are being looked for on facebook, so its not just me having the problem. Unless your friends are also on the political/underground sites then they are probably not being monitered. It is common for the internet to be monitered for national security reasons, such as in Japan, China and the USA.
Talking of the strange things happening in the world...my sister in Fife (an absolute down to earth realist if ever there was one!) sent me a message that she had been woken during the night by a very loud humming noise. She thought it was her freezer so went down to check it and found that it was not even firing up. The humming was getting louder so she opened the front door and it was coming from the earth beneath her and the sky. She could feel it right through her body and it shook her up no end. Scary stuff....she is the last person on earth I ever thought would tell me something weird like that.
We have been hearing the loud buzzing noise here for a long time, and for the last two years the sound of heavy machinery digging that seems to come from underground (considering I live way up in a mountain village and my house has rock under it, thats pretty strange). Anyone else heard anything strange....I even made a recording of it to make sure I wasn't imagining it....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Well it's not compulsory
is it - we each choose what to prep for and how to do it. For me its weather first then food shortages/price hikes then strike action.
The year I had my middle child I was hauling a big pram with a newborn plus a toddler in it, up 7 flights of pitch black stairs in a multi-storey flat with no elect for half the week and food prices went through the roof, because of strikes.
The year I had my youngest I was stuck in a maternity ward with no hot food, no nappies, no laundry, it was New Year and bloody freezing...because of strikes.
The year we moved down here was the worst winter they'd had in years, the main A class road was closed for 4-5 days, kids were ski-ing on it, and the power was off more than it was on. The village had one shop only.
The year I moved into this village I arrived on Hogmanay and we were snowed in for 3 weeks before we had even unpacked.
It always pays to prep!:D

I can't speak for anyone but me on this thread, I'm very ordinary and quite down to earth , I have made some preparations as you know, if you've read anything I've posted before this. I think if you are trying to put in some sort of support system just in case, you aren't necessarily preparing for a specific event, but for the possibility of having to fend for yourself for a little time should any such thing happen unexpectedly. Look at what happened recently in Japan, and how they have had to pick up their lives since the Tsunami which wasn't predicted and disrupted so much of the infrastructure. The focus today has been a little on events that might happen, just as the media were talking last year of the fact that an influenza pandemic is 'long overdue' and slightly differently we are all wondering about the Euro situation and what might happen there, and consequently how it will affect us here in the UK. I don't intend buying weaponry of any kind, I wouldn't be able to use it if I did. I do have some food and water, medications and household things but not because I think the world is seriously going to end anytime soon. I prep if that is the right word for what I do because in a situation that arrives unexpectedly I don't want to be a problem if I can avoid doing so. If I can manage safely to stay in my own home then I'm prepared for that and the emergency services can help someone else who needs helping. I don't go to excessive lengths with all this and I'm not trying to scare anyone with apocalyptic scenarios, but I do believe that being a little prepared for the unexpected is just common sense. I hope no one is offended by this post but a little common sense goes a very long way to solving any kind of problem!0

Its probably the zombies working their way from underground to get us, seriously some of the posts on this thread begger belief, you really could not make them up !0 -
Mrs L yes yes yes commonsense is the key
