  • Catzine, I have for years given or advised family or friends to take small emergency bag- the type you put bits in to go swimming, you tie them round your waist or hang round your neck,so not big but waterproof.

I make them up with matches - out of box but not safety (if only type you can get then include the part you strike on) waterproof if possible if not ordinary ones with heads covered with Vaseline.
    6 Tealight candles
    Water purification tablets
Whistle (I have some with compass at one end ( they actually hold matches inside and have strike area on side which works when wet.)
    Micropore Tape
    Dressings
    Plasters
    Sanitizing Hand Gel
    Antiseptic Wipes
    Hand Wipes
    Antiseptic Cream
    Small Torch
Anything else you can think of and fit in.

Son found it useful when they went to Spain and power cut hit as did friend who was caught on top of Empire State building in the big blackout that covered most of east coast of USA and Canada, she used torch and whistle to guide people. She had never taken as much as torch but I talked her into taken the bag and made her promise she would keep it with her on days. She then used the tealights for light at their hotel, she told me smoke alarm went off but they just prised the battery out as of course they were only running on them. Am sure people can come up with better but it gives you an idea.

I wouldn't dare tell you all the bits I throw in my suitcase when I go abroad, so far I have been lucky and never needed them, but wouldn't be without them, not that can go anywhere just now, not while youngest dog is alive anyway. Even though oldest son lives in Melbourne now I still remind him to pack that little bag and he assures me he does after what happened in Spain. Until then he just threw it in suitcase to keep me happy:) First aid parts are always used. I did for him and others fuller ones of course which also have been used, including the sterilised needles etc by son in Africa as he would have had to have one that was only washed not boiled urg.

Lifesystems do a good sterilised first aid pack that is not to expensive, am sure must be others out there but I have only bought theirs.
Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

  • Thanks 2tonsils for the updates. Makes for interesting reading on what is really happening in Greece. Keep updating us when you can as it's a good example of what could happen here and what we do need to be possibly prepared for.

    Take care.

I'm afraid that it will and I think some of it is happening but the media is ignoring some of it(perhaps they've been told not to)and I think our leaders are playing it down and events like the Olympics have been used to divert the public's attention.

Considering I have always been of a sunny disposition and not been down(much)but I have seen depression in loved one's and had my moments too so I can really feel it for those who get depressed and the worst thing anyone can say even if well meant is "Pull yourself together!" If you could...you would. No one would choose to be depressed. And when I was, it took over my whole life and was always there at the forefront of everything I did.

You have a broken leg, you can see it...when it's your mind/brain you can't. Its kind of funny to think that when you suffer with depression and try to get well again it's your own mind/brain talking about itself.

In some ways I can understand people not wanting to know what is happening and hearing/reading what is happening perhaps wanting to ignore things and pretend it isn't as it is depressing and worrying but we need to know and if we don't we won't be prepared nor will we have the support of others or get ideas and tips on how to get through this...we certainly are not getting it from our leaders.

I hate having to be so political and until recently felt I could keep politics at arms length but now it seems to really be invading my life and so I cannot be accused of leaning one way or another I don't think any party is any better than another and I don't think any of them really know what's happening.

Yes, this would be all we need to happen and we know its coming just not when as GQ mentioned the Yellowstone Park one.

Look what happened when the Icelandic volcano messed up Europe and the carry on about planes not being able to fly. Now if the we had a really bad situation where the place was covered in dust and the sun was blotted out...heaven help us...this planet gives life but it can easily take it away...it is very fragile regardless of what they say man does...when our world decides its time nothing we do can stop it.

Further preps I have done over the last week (to add to my other stuff mentioned in my previous post)

Bought a Snugpak *grab bag* (although its called 'Snugpak Response Bag' in Olive Green (good for cammo) to store my emergency grab bag type stuff. BUY HERE (excellent quality, built to withstand, tough) Compact but like a tardis inside

Some of the stuff inside includes

1 x large Maglight (also useful for defence, effective smashing someone over head lol)

1 x mini Maglight (for other requirements)
1 x Cammo Swiss Army Knife (essential)
1 x Seven Oceans Emergency Food Ration Liferaft Survival Biscuits 500g - You can buy them here, HIGHLY recommend for emergency 3 day ration pack:
1 x Seven Oceans Long-Life Emergency Drinking Water 500ml For Liferafts, Lifeboats Survival - buy here -

Plus in the grabbag I can store other weapons if the need should arise. Last on my list to buy will be a Crossbow (food and defence)

(I wouldn't like to bump into me in a survival mode :p)

And best of all, delivered today, my new ultra awesome Titanium Whistle :D I bought mine from here, where you can see it.

I have been buying bulk food for a fair while, I'm good to go now - last thing to get will be the crossbow (legal in the UK)

Forgot to add: on advice from a post on this thread, headed over to myprotein and bought a 5kg pack of protein (chocolate smooth) and mixer bottle - arrived today, tastes fantastic (excellent back up of easily prepared, digestible protein in case protein is in short supply)

Oh dear. I used to live near Mt Fuji. Japan doesn't need any more major disasters at the moment....

Do you seriously think you need a crossbow?
Wow, this thread has really stepped up a gear today! Serious end of the world stuff being talked about now. I had no idea there were so many impending natural disasters to whip ourselves into a fenzy about. :)

If the sun is blotted out and the planet ceases to exist, no amount of purification tablets, crossbows and kelly kettles is going to save anyone.

My God, the Daily Mail are hardly likely NOT to print anything that could scaremonger :rotfl:. All they ever print is exaggeration and scaremongering. You know the Olympics were planned for 7 years right? That's some forward thinking/convenience of the Govt to hide impending disaster behind a major sporting event.
There is potential bad news and conspiracy all over the internet. I personally believe that when times are tough we should concentrate on the here and now with some sensible prep for the future. Going looking for worries seems a bit futile to me.

2Tonsils. What makes you think your internet usage is being monitered. Just emailed my friends in Greece to see if they knew anything about it and I think she thought I'd lost my marbles. They have heard of nothing to suggest it is happening and haven't lost access to any sites.

OK I really am bowing out of this thread now. As you have all said, if you don't like, don't read and I will take your advice.

If the end of the world is as near as you guys think, I am not sure hoarding food is going to help you an awful lot, if the end is coming I intend to get very drunk
