I thought I'd list out what I have as my version on an every day carry as i was chatting to a friend about "being prepared" and she carries nothing at all!
I have of course my lovely swiss card that I bought the other week which consists of a small ruler, scissors, pen, blade, tweezers, pin, light, magnifier, mini screwdrivers
in my wallet: credit card, cashpoint card, paper money, loose change, some store cards, postage stamps, emery board, fake pound coin token for lockers and shopping trollies, card part of driving licence, another magnifier freebie from vision express, a few vouchers and coupons
ON my bag (hanging as decoration hidden amonst charms etc) I have two sharpie pens, a small foldup backpack, an led torch, a safety pin, a paperclip, a bottle opener and small blade, another pound token thing
IN my bag: filofax which contains SO much I can't even list! including yet another £1 token, steristrips and a facemask!), keys, headphones, phone and usb charger, spare hair bobble, antihistamines, store card wallet, camera, wallet (see above)
In front pocket of bag: dogtag (mirror), mini pack of playing cards, pumpkin 9 bar, coffee sachet, transpore tape (bidirectional tear fab stuff!), tissues
In back pocket of bag: salt, sugar, sweetner, wet wipes, imodium melts, loperamide, buscopan, oystercard, spare daily meds
no wonder I have backache(Don't worry its a tiny back pack I am not putting strain on just one shoulder for any osteo types!)
what have you got? what should I add?
OMG, there should be a light bulb smilie! This is a fabulous topic for a new thread - what useful stuff do you carry with you every day?
ETA Not a smilie, but found the light bulb icon for the post :cool:0 -
I'm not worried by the hordes coming up here - one month of our weather and they'll all go back down south again!
I can't quite understand people who prefer not to know about prepping - it's just ostrich mentality and we owe it to our families to be savvy. You don't need to go overboard or panic, just take time to think about it.
I'm clearing out cupboards and shifting stuff around here so I can have some space just in case I need it.
Is it a legitimate prep to spend loads on --oooops I mean invest in -knitting yarn? (somebody please say YES of course it's vital)0 -
YES,YES,YES,YES,YES!!!!!!- not only legitimate but imperative otherwise the world will run out of socks and the lord only knows what sort of anarchy that would lead to - MAR, save the world - BUY WOOL !!!!!!!!! Grin, Lyn xxx.0

Not quite sure what you mean by ostrich mentality when I personally don't feel the need to buy all sorts of outdoor equipment to boil some water when two years ago when the snow was half way up the back door we couldn't get the door open as it was frozen solid. I certainly wouldn't be having fires in the middle of my kitchen floor.
Re the Army and the Olympics my brother was just back from a tour of duty and straight in to helping in London, there would have been no Olympics had the Army not been called in and I for one am very proud of all the boys, athletes and the volunteers.
I only ever carry my purse and my phone if I was out in town on a Saturday night with a knife attached to my bag I'd be talking to the police in an instant.:j0 -
You don't need to spend lot of money on outdoor cooking equipment. I've successfully cooked on a Roses tin. I tried it as an experiment. Now I know that should the electric cease I can warm food up with sticks and tumble dryer fluff. I feel it's useful to have that kind of information but I totally understand if others don't think so.
I'm very proud that our Army personnel were able to help us out with our security at the games and do wonder why our lads and lasses couldn't do it any way?
I'm another one that doesn't carry anything more than purse, phone and keys. I'm only ever around the village so I have to weigh up whether it's important for me to carry more. Eeek at the thought of carrying a blade, however small. It is illegal to be found even with scissors on your person isn't it?
What is useful to some isn't useful to others. I still like to read though, skimming past the things I find irrelevant.0 -

I've just said pretty much the same myself on a different forum
My son is a policeman, not a civilian, he's not had any leave in months and working 7 or 8 consecutive days before just one off. When I bemoaned his lot to him ( and the fact they didn't get given tickets to see any events ) he tore me off a (gentle) strip saying it was the army guys and girls deserved our sympathies. He said without them there wouldn't have been any Olympics, and he pointed out most should have been on leave, not manning the venues. He, like all my family, say a heartfelt thank you to these marvellous men and women.
Sorry OT but then again it was raisedYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
I agree Churchmouse and I don't really think it is OT, it would happen again if things go pearshaped(unrest on the streets)still could happen be it riots/strikes/changes coming with the austerity plans. Then though I cannot say event happening as big as the Paralymics/Olympics in many years the army, emegency services, police and lots of volunteers were needed and would be again.
The government may be able to force such services to do what they do but it still requires a massive amount of goodwill..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Just been to Poundland and no sign of any camping stuff  wanted a couple of bits and bobs in general. Bought a compact tool set with screwdrivers and allen keys. So if Im attacked in Ikea I can assemble all the furniture and make a castle out of it :rotfl: Actually its very handy as I use allen keys a lot here and at Dd's and can never find them, same with screwdrivers.
Wool is a necessity Mardatha what else will we do whilst waiting for the rest of the world to organise its self, and knitting is stress relieving when you are snowed in, as you so often are
The idea of prepping is a purely personal choice and obviously some of the posters already did have a lot of things already in place ie Vannoonoo - excellent kit by the way. Some like Mardatha live high up in Scotland and regularly get snowed and her and hubby both suffer ill health so she has to be prepared. I live close to Manchester city centre with a disabled husband and during the last severe weather spent almost 3 weeks stuck in the house as we couldnt get the wheelchair through the snow. I am also all electric and need alternatives for cooking 'just in case' We are not encouraging people to turn into domesday preppers just helping those of a similair mindset.Clearing the junk to travel light

I will get my caravan0 -

All excellent points...I am doing it for money reasons but if I have enough I don't have to go out and being not so good on my legs if the weather was bad I'd be staying indoors even though I'd miss having a little bit of a look out.
Even when it rains a walking stick can shoot away as paths are slippy and you can fall over and as you say a wheel chair will not manage snow and ice and therefore even mobility scooter will not necessarily work either. Best to stay indoors and avoid accidents/broken bones..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
