Their default position is, all addresses require a TV Licence.
You do know, many of the TVL/Capita employees, who visit addresses, haven't been CRB checked?0 -
homesteadchick,
I'm not generally a Telegraph reader (as in almost never) but this article has a fairly decent summary of China and Russia's reluctance to back any sort of UN resolution. The author of this particular article is reasonably well informed even if I don't agree with him on a number of points.:D

The long and short of it is that China and Russia believe in carrying out international affairs with as little intervention as possible, unless it is to preserve stability, particularly in areas where it affects their borders or economic or energy security. "The west" in a general sense, particularly since the late 90s, has taken the view that intervention is justified on far more frequent grounds although they never agree on what those grounds are and are never particularly successful in achieving their long term goals. (Grounds like human rights violations are not hard and fast concepts) Both Russia and China have historical reasons for being sceptical of these rather nebulously defined reasons for intervention as they were used to justify a number of proxy wars during the Cold War and they are keen to see such a precedent in this era avoided where possible. The long and short of it is that China and Russia see the Assad regime as not particularly nice, but also not particularly troubling as long as it stays in his corner. Where as they see overreach, particularly American overreach troubling.
I don't think, however, they would go to war over it. They will do a lot of diplomatic posturing to show their disapproval, but it simply isn't in their interests to start a larger scale conflict.0 -
Thanks!
Very informative. Thank you.

Ooh Kimchi. I developed a taste for that last year in Korea. I am going back soon. How do you make it?
I usually make cabbage or carrot kimchi. (Its deffo more of a western version of kimchi) Chop up cabbage (chinese leaves are traditional) or shred carrots, salt it and pound till brine is released. (if the cabbage is very old you might need to leave it to soften overnight) Check how salty it is and if too much give it a quick rinse. Add LOADS of ginger, garlic and chilli flakes. Give it all a good pounding and stuff it into a glass jar making sure the brine covers the cabbage. Don't worry if you think its too spicey, it really mellows during fermentation. If you don't have enough brine to cover, just add some salty water to it.
I usually then pop the lid on top unfastened to stop dust etc getting in and sit the jar on a plate. Shove in corner of kitchen for a week for it to bubble and do its thing. Give it a taste and if it tastes good, seal the jar and put in the fridge to slow do the fermentation process and then eat it all!
Traditionally kimchi has fish sauce in it too but I leave it out as OH dislikes it but if he isn't gonna eat some then I will put some in.
Edited to say that traditionally kimchi also has daikon radish in it, I never put any in but only because I don't live near a shop that sells it.0 -
It's your choice PP, but perhaps you should be aware, that one TVL "Enfarcement Officer" has been convicted of rape (albeit not whilst "on duty"), another of assaulting a disabled householder, two others of falsifying statements used for prosecutions, and one of stealing licence payments (all these whilst "on duty").
The BBC have admitted, via a FOI response, to 11 individuals who:-
"were convicted of criminal offences committed in the course of their official duties of TV Licensing".
You should also bear in mind that these are commission salesmen, so they have a financial incentive to flog you a licence, and/or prosecute you, whether you actually need a licence or not.
It is not unheard of, for them to lie to your face, as I can attest from personal experience.0 -
Oh and regarding the telly licence. We don't have a telly and I just sent them their demand letter back with a note on the bottom saying I didn't have a tv for religious reasons. That isn't the reason why I don't have one but I thought they might take it more seriously. I got a letter back saying thanks for letting us know and haven't heard from them since!0

Give it a year or so, and they'll be back.
BTW. Was there nothing along the lines of "we may visit confirm this"?0 -

Ha ha. I bet they thought you were a radical Muslim. They're scared of them.0 -

Yeah they said they might visit but this was approx 4 years ago and they haven't.0 -
Thanks for that BB, I didn't know that, you're right of course it pays to be careful.
Moving away from TV licensing, this on zerohedge has me thinking. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-08-29/chairman-zurich-insurance-quits-following-cfo-suicide
When senior financial executives top themselves and others resign it makes me wonder what they know that we don't. Zurich is a big insurer - we have car insurance with them - best not have any accidents...0
