This is an old book from 1909:

There are a lot of hints regarding doing things the old fashioned way. I think you guys may enjoy it.0 -
A pocket rocket is a very small burner that folds out to provide a tripod to cook/boil upon. The gas canister is what takes a lot of the weight. DH has had it from his hiking days.0
-
I've got a similar sort of lightweight stove, except it's a lot cheaper, and has Piezo ignition.0
-
Gosh Bob, you have such a lot of emergency equipment, where on earth do you find the room to keep it all, you must have a very large flat with lots of storage, I'd have to move out to the garden shed if we had so much.0

would like to thank all of you for giving me the ideas and impetus to start prepping & being more organised it has improved my life and sense of security. I feel with my preps and BOB, emergency supplies in my car and my get home bag that I am prepared for most situations that may come my way (OK maybe not the zombie apocalypse! LOL)
Thankyou all for just being on this forum and making me realise that I have to take responsibility for my own future and possible survival, that TPTB probably wont be there as we hope and that I am not really in need of a tinfoil hat just the right sort of nutters to discuss things with!! :T
Take care everyone ELaine
Hello Elaine241
Thanks!:o Nice to know that my ramblings help a bit. I take inspiration myself from GreyQueen, & others here, even mischievous BedsitBob does a nice line in photo's of stuff he has...
You have a staggering amount of stuff you've achieved. Well done! Makes me determined to prep on.

Hello all (& newbies, and lurkers :j)
On the topic of keeping a low profile. Maybe ours is a bit too low. We keep getting targeted by cold callers at the door, who are under the impression that we are elderly and therefore:
1) Soft targets for a hard sell
2) E.g. in need of double glazing despite the fact we obviously have it already!
3) Or are they just checking we are there?
4) Suckers for a con e.g. tarmac over concrete drive anyone?
Sorry to sound a bit racist, but, we seem to have a lot of unidentifiable travelling folk in white vans/flatbed trucks looking for a fast buck.
I think living on an estate, and in a bungalow, plus not making a lot of expensive 'improvements' to our front or drive, is giving others the wrong signal!
Maybe I should get round to weeding the driveway... Or maybe I should leave it as cunning camo (along with the crumbling driveway) that really, we definitely aren't worth robbing/looting WTSHTF?
I like GQ's recommendation that we discreetly secure, e.g. steel doorframe/door, etc. Perhaps Bessie would appreciate a bigger dog companion?

BBB it's happening here too, we are getting more and more 'unrefusable' offers from cold callers too and those folks who have been working locally and have 'just a bit of tarmac left Madam, just enough to do your drive', the charity muggers are also calling with alarming regularity and are harder to dismiss than lots of the others. I try to be firm but pleasant, say I've had all the things done that we will be able to afford and need done thank you, but I hope you have better luck elsewhere and they usually are pleasant. I hate the ones who offer firstly replacement windows, then when you say no offer doors, porches, kitchens, bathrooms, garage doors and at the last stand conservatories, but they get bored and go eventually. You just have to be firm, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

Charity muggers - I refuse to support charities that use these tactics, and have told several that they've lost a supporter and then cancelled direct debits, followed by a letter to the charity informing them why. So far this has had little effect other than the money I do donate going to local causes, since it tends to be the national charities, that can afford TV advertising and paying commissions to their collectors, who use these tactics.0

Glad it's not just us then... Although I do think our lack of kerb appeal does give the cold callers the idea that we are elderly... They always look surprised if I answer the door!
No. I just haven't got round to the weeding yet... Erm. For the last x months.
Who was it who said weeds are just plants in the wrong place? And in my defence, can't you eat some weeds? There. I am just 'keeping' extra back up supplies....

Good for you. I always tell them I prefer to give direct (or donate stuff to their shops). Or don't answer the door. Or hide behind the curtains till they're gone... My OH has been known to lurk behind the front door until they feed their leaflet/envelope/charity bag through the letterbox, and push it straight back out at them! I think he has a slightly twisted sense of humour....
