  • Hi Guys,

Haven't posted for a while, but came on for a bit of reading for a morale boost - lovely to hear from Smileyt, and nice to read that Mar and Shergar are feeling good with the kelp.

Things are going downhill here - its a little depressing to be honest. - Work is getting busier as money is cut from personal budgets and services are slashed.
    - My arthritis has worsened again and I'm in a 2 month period of gradually increasing meds - the side effects are worse this time around, lasting most of the week between doses
    - due to personal money pressures my stores have dwindled.
    - a close relationship has ended

Sorry! sounds more dismal than it is!!!!

I have a plan, but its frustratingly slow moving these days. I'm trying to restock my preps with the minimal amount of money, saving a little here and there where I can. Looking again at AF etc but the extra postage costs to here make the savings negligible - so wish we lived near a big supermarket! Keeping on making do and mending.

I'm trying to decide whether to focus on my etsy store to make a little extra money or spend my spare time sewing/knitting etc for us - cannot decide which is most cost effective??? In the past I've always focussed on saving money first, before making extra money, but times are so tight these days I'm undecided. I have lots of yarn, fabric etc, so no initial outlay either way.

Anyway, off to wash the dishes,

    WCS

    Hello WCS

Never give up. Things I have been through (& OH) would probably make your hair curl. But we survived. Prepping and sorting finances at least gave us some hope that no matter what S was HTF we still had a roof over our heads and food to eat, even if barely functioning elsewhere...

Now we are out the other side and wondering how in h*ll we survived it. It will make you stronger, more determined, and more organised to prep better.

And say 'Sod the dishes'! I am getting my life on track!!

off out soon for a couple of pints and watch community shield.....bought a few more tins of the small curries from home and bargains only 49p each...stop buying crisps as i have put nearly a stone on in weight this year and cut down on eating out.. wish me luck
  • Hi Bessibooboo,

Yes been through the mill myself on numerous occasions - we always survive though don't we??

I appreciate your moral support thankyou. If I hadn't been a "prepper" (not sure I like the word still, for me it's about being a thrifty houswife) then things would be considerably worse right now.

I think i'm finding it harder this time as in the past I've always felt that so long as I have my health I can fight any battle - i'm still coming to terms with aggressive arthritis and it's a bit discombobulating to find i'm not the me i've always been :)

    Have a great day, WCS

Been a while since i posted on here.

WCS were going through the same thing, financial wise the !!!!!! has the fan. We've just got out tax forms through the post. Guess what i'll be doing tomorrow. I'm in too much of an emotional state to do it today.

Sorry i can't remember who asked who would come to ours if anything happened.

Em everyone! I already them turning up now during any crisis so if a major crisis arrived they would be at door straight off the bat.
They already shop from my cupboards as it is! swear its like a supermarket here with the amount of carrier bags that leave the house. Recently though i'd have to say sorry i can't spare this much anymore.

I'm pretty much the only one cooks from scratch in every shape or form. They all think i'm mad growing my own veg and making our own things.

On the other prep side, we now have have no freezer, it weird getting used to life without one. don't think we'll last that long without one though. I like the idea of freezing leftovers.

Sorry if this has been mentioned in the thread already but it's rather long to read through.

Do people keep stores of drinking water at home? I'm not talking about what's in your tank in the loft, I'm talking properly filtered and rotated water kept in BPA-free plastic drums. I have read that to keep it safe to drink you have to put a few drops of bleach in each container and wondered if anyone here does that.

You have to filter the water when you want to drink it, but even so the idea of deliberately adding bleach doesn't sit well with me.

What do people do for safe water storage?

I use 17p 2 litre still bottled water, standing in a corner of the kitchen under the counter out of the light, plus some more in a shed attached to the block. Plus a big water tank.

I think the bleach bit is to purify dodgy water and you let it stand for 1 mins. The ratio is key and you should use an unperfumed bleach. You can achieve the same effect with Milton Sterilising Fluid (NOT Milton tabs, contain a different chemical.

Going to leave it there, have been having probs posting since last night and this mightn't get thru.

  • Hi BOUNDERBY I keep a supply of water here in ex vinegar gallon containers and camping water carriers from our camping days. I don't add bleach although I know you can do so safely. I change the water once in 3 months, the old water goes into the water butts for the garden and the new water into storage. You can use Milton Liquid for water purification, the same stuff you soak babies bottles and teats in, the ratio is 2.5 mls of Milton to 5 litres of water and leave for 15 minutes before using for drinking. The Milton is available widely in pharmacies and the information about water purification isn't on the bottle but is on the manufacturers website if you want to read all of it. I would use the Milton in an emergency situation and the water stored was at the end of the 3 month period, hope that helps, Cheers Lyn x.
