We went through our emergency food box yesterday afternoon, and discovered most of it was out of date. We've now decided to check it twice a year, to prevent it happening again.

Have been putting a list together on mr t, and it comes to just over fifty quid. Didn't think that was too bad.
Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.
    Baby due July 2018.
  • What kind of stuff was it?

Canned food is usable, WAY beyond the expiry date.

Likewise, things in jars, such as pickles, jams, honey etc.

So did you throw it? I've even used out of date flour which was stored without any of the precautions people recommend. There were no moving parts so I used it and am still here to tell the tale :D
That said - it does make sense to keep a stock rotation check and use the oldest stuff first. Plus it removes the risk of ending up with 3 million tins of one thing and running completely out of something else!

Hello all, back from my festival, which went really well & was most enjoyable, and now looking forwards to a month tied to home; we have students staying for just about all of August. This will give me a chance to catch up with all things domestic & prep-wise, like foraging, making loads of jam, checking the window-quilts (the very thought! Still very sticky down here) etc. etc.

Especially if it's 3 million tins of baked beans.

    Hi all :)

I ran my stocks down when we were getting ready to move house and it was spaghetti hoops we ended up with loads of. My new tins move to the top of the cupboard and then forward and new stuff goes in behind (and then into a plastic box in the spare room ) so that they are getting constantly up.

I'm determined that those spaghetti hoops won't be wasted though (they've still a decent date on so I think some will find there way to the local food bank)

    Better go

This happened to me recently but lucky it's mostly stuff that's in jars and dried stuff so will still be ok. However the large box of tins in the shed which is in date I'd forgotten about and since it's been so hot I'm not sure I want to risk it. With temps so high and the shed being in the sunniest bit of our tiny garden. I'm sure it must have reached well over 35 degrees in there.

pineapple, I'm still using 2009 flour without probs with no multi legged critters invading as yet (touch wood)
  • It's just suddenly occured on me that, while I have plenty of toilet rolls in stock, they might not be the best option for "dealing with business", if there's a shortage of water, meaning no (or very few) baths.

In that case, I'm thinking moist wipes would be a better option.

So, any recommendations for a good/cheap brand, for me to stock up with?

Have you been spying on my stocks, BB?
After extensive testing I can report that a tin of baked beans is good for up to two years past the best-before date. Three years is pushing it even for me, they were going black and didn't smell too good either...
