Forgive me preppers for I haven't yet sinned but am sure I'm going to :D
I'm desperate - going for a mad day out up in the big city (aka Edinburgh) - and I want to float round the big stores and look at perfume and make-up and hair gunk and shoes and and and.... :rotfl::rotfl:
Please can I have a day off growing turnip and making do and sides to middling ?? I have been very very :A honest..
:D Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to get a J*nners carrier bag for the minimium expenditure on goods. Bonzo bonus points for getting one without spending ANYTHING.

Then you can hide something preptastic in it at a later day and no one will ever guess that you're one of the preppers.

Hokay, gonna go to work now. Say "hi" to Auld Reekie for me, willya?

PS We shall expect a full report on your day this evening.

    Morning all :D

GQ they'll be having a run on tin foil at this rate with all the guberment announcements..have a good day X

Mcjordi so sorry to hear you're going through the mill atm I'll be entering the world of ESA soon possibly when DS2 leaves school until his heart etc is fixed it scares the bejesus out of me even thinking about more forms..hope you get it all sorted X

You too Hester and seigemode I hate forms and seem to spend half my days filling them out for my lot

Was thinking about Hester and Nuatha yesterday while reading a lovely article in our local about a couple getting wed they had a motorbike escort complete with trike for the bride and a handfasting ceremony lovely pics :D

I got up late today and the school bus was early..DS3 was sat in his pants when it arrived...cue much flapping and benny hill music trying to get him ready! He has his minute by minute routine in the mornings so was NOT impressed with me :o Usual chaotic start to the day then for us !!

Orf out the garden to do some work as we'll need to water tonight I have 3 inch cucumbers *whoop* almost there as they're the mini ones flowers appearing on some tomatoes and peppers and the courgettes are starting to motor along now too.

My red duke of yorks are flowering they went in the potato towers on the 4th march in the greenhouse at first and just itching to have a furtle..never grown these before shall I hold off a week or two yet??
I'm sick of the cra**y potatoes we've had from MrT..I know they can't help it as it was a bad year but even the new potatoes this week were appalling.

DS3's strawberries are trying for world domination I think, they look mad this year including his white ones, licking my lips in anticipation, not that we get a look in with him :D

Coffee needs refilling so I need to get going have a great day all XX

ooh have a lovely day Mar we all need to get out and about and blow away the cobwebs at times! XX

Mar - only if you take me with you. I was given a voucher for Harvey Nicks for Christmas which I believe will cover a cocktail or two in their chocolate bar thing......

MAR if you're going to sin you might as well sin in heaps and enjoy it!!! Surely that is part of what the being careful and frugal is about, not to ALWAYS have to be thinking 'don't spend, don't buy anything that isn't a basic etc' surely part of the joy of being careful is to amass the spare to once in a while be able to buy some things you need? even some things you want? Go and enjoy yourself, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Every once in a while I have a splurge on a 'luxury'. The latest was a tin of crab meat. Has to be a change from tuna and sardines no?
Anyway I would say to others - don't bother. It was even more masticated in texture than cheap tuna and it tasted precisely of - brine. I drained away the brine to be left with the flavour of - nothing.
On reflection I don't think the delicate flavour of a freshly dressed crab can be captured in a tin :(
  • Hi PINEAPPLE, I think the odd nice thing is a morale boost, and life shouldn't all be sackcloth and ashes, luckily most of us, like you, see the treat in something little, like a tin of crab meat or a bunch of local asparagus and don't hanker for the Rolls Royce and Manor House so it doesn't break the bank to make us happy.

How are your I*ea bag planters coming along? This lovely weather is bringing things along nicely down here, hope it's the same for you, Cheers Lyn xxx.

I wonder in my innocence why it is that we, the general population get the blame for all the food problems, and never is the finger pointed at food manufacturers, particularly the BIG multi product companies who apparently have more clout with thier opinions than the entire population of GB?
Because money talks and we don't have a say because they keep us poor with low wages or use us as slavefare to up the profits of the big retailers for the pittance that is called dole these days, which incidentaly is worth a third of what was in Thatcher's day

mcjordi, fell free to rant, we all know how lousy it is filling in damn forms, they make me feel stupid ...and Im sure Im not...I has papers to prove it...

Noticing we are re-filling the bird feeders a lot so there must not be much wild food around, in fact we have never had so many birds in the garden. My crops seem to be about a month behind although the plants are strong and healthy. I guess I will have to be patient. Think its going to be a good year for soft fruit - dont they say thats a sign of a bad winter? insert shivering smiley :o My kale is growing well I popped it low down in an I*ea bag to protect it from the cold and have already had a dish of crisps made from it, they are addictive - avert your eyes Mar :rotfl:

I would love to know how to de-hydrate potatoes when I tried they all turned brown - HELP!!!

Its actually quite chilly here today.

  • Been having a little read about the Eat Less Meat issue and can't find a direct answer as to why. The statement that if we in the UK eat less meat it will help 3rd world small holders comes up often but not how it will help. The thing they skirt round most is the wasted food issue, and that seems to aimed at supermarkets and manufacturers so perhaps it would be more sensible for TPTB to insist on changes to the SMs attitude that they will only sell perfect to look at items of fruit and veg and farmers and growers having to dump untold tonnages of perfectly edible food, because it's ugly!!! The meat issue appears to be about feeding grain to livestock intended for meat, and the fact that grains should feed people not animals so people can then eat them. On a couple of the farming sites however, it is pointed out that grass fed livestock take much longer to fatten and if we stop eating meat, the grasslands would probably be lost forever as they would be switched to use as arable land. It is not at all clear how eating less meat would benefit the UK public, except in a health respect.

I'm with you on the tinned crab meat. And I have a whole lot of tins from an AF bargain case. I think the answer is probably to turn them into crab cakes flavoured with lemongrass, chilli, coriander etc. I may do that in bulk and freeze them. It certainly doesn't make a delicious crab salad. I do wonder whether it might be OK in crab souffle as I have a mountain of eggs to use!
