hi, did a search for cobb fuel and this thread popped up - I know it's not strictly what you are about, but someone on here has a cobb BBQ, and I wanted to know where I could cheaply stock up on fuel for it? very grateful for any ideas, ta

That was lucky Lobby just came in for lunch yes it's me that has one.
I use mainly cobblestones and if Lakeland don't have any on offer I get them direct from the cobb manufacturer. http://www.cobb-bbq.co.uk/Products.aspx?class=accessories

You can also use normal charcoal and some users use heat beads which you can get from Waitrose I think?

I'm doing the chicken for our dinner in mine tomorrow actually :D I love my cobb

but were no use for reading or anything that required a bit more focussed light. For that I would recommend head-torches (possibly with rechargeable batteries?)

For reading, get yourself a Paraffin Hurricane lamp.

They throw out a heck of a lot of light and, as a bonus, a not inconsiderable amount of heat.

:) By heck, I'm getting a bit weary. Ye olde push bike has been earning its keep today.

I had to go to Distant Plaza, a shopping zone (a pseudononymous shopping zone, obvs) which I don't normally frequent, which was a journey in the one direction.

Then doubled-back the pretty way, because what's the point in living in a picturesque place if you don't do the pretty ways from time to time, then to Scruffy Centre, chazzer central.

Woop-woop, the girl done good; a steel teapot and steel mixing bowl for 10p each, and a candle in a glass for another 10p, then another candle-lantern for 50p and a Kilner jar (big!) for £1.50. How preptastic is that? The pot and the bowl were on the wanted list but I was waiting for a bargain.

I'm also going to keep a cagey eye out for a few more bits for the linen cupboard, when I see good examples going for silly money, as you do from time to time. I recall something a pal told me about a couple who were friends of her parents, back in the day (1950s-1960s). They were just regular folks with not a lot of money but occasionally a wee bit extra came in. You know how it goes, bit on the bingo, bit of overtime, that sort of thing.

To stop this windfall being eaten up with day-to-day expenditures, they'd "invest" it in stuff for the home such as sheets, blankets, towels etc. They might not be brought into service for a while, but these things store quite happily and they saved money in the long run. When you need something, you haven't always got the dosh and the price isn't always right.

:o I may also have fallen thru the doors of Poondland and got one of those triangular silver shelters. It's a sop to prevent my purchasing the emergency silver foil anoraks they have in Goo Ooot........... They're the best part of a tenner, and I shouldn't buy one. Tell me I shouldn't buy one. I have silver emergency blankets, I don't need one of those.......... help!

And I hied me to the allotment and sowed several rows of carrots, and some more leeks and beets. I scowled menacingly at the beets sown 32 days ago, of which I can see about half a dozen the size of cress. This is a p-poor performance by my book.

Proper plants have been very sluggish this year but the weeds are going gangbusters. Bearing in mind that my allotment seems to grow "fat hen" better than anything which I intend to grow, and it is edible, I was giving thought to cultivating that instead of conventional veggies.

Howsomever, having experimented with various edible plants described as "famine foods" you can see why people tend to wait for a famine before bothering with them.:rotfl:

Spent a mellow bit of time listening to some toons and placing my tealights on bits of card and securing them with clingfilm. I have a lot of clingfilm bought for a few pence a roll on special offer years ago. Doesn't seem to go peculiar with time, which is more than you can say for many things in this life.

Short-bird, I'm at a funny age, too. I spent half of Tues morning this week thinking it was Weds morning. Which would have been fine except I was at work................lol.

OK, I shall take a short intermission to eat a whoopsied Tosspots scone with a Sainsbugs Basics pot of tea. I'm not using my new teapot yet as it's rather scruffy and is having it's insides soaked in boiling water and bicarb, prior to a really good clean tomorrow, and then several washes in piping hot water. I don't mind secondhand stuff being a bit grubby if the price is dirt cheap, but I do insist on it being spotless before it's brought into service.

  • our biggest problem is not having any form of heating apart from GCH.

You could get one of these. £15 @ B&M.

    Or maybe a paraffin heater.

Failing that, a couple of Paraffin Hurricane lamps will put out a fair bit of heat, as well as a lot of light.

GQ - what does your linen cupboard need furnished with? Mine needs a serious empty.
Slight hoarding tendencies (no thanks to you lot by the way:p) and having had to clear out both mother's houses:( has left a surplus that gravitated to spare room cupboard (the one that you throw things in & slam the door shut quickly and stand well back as you open it one :o).

And it would leave more room for proper preps :D
