  • For the benefit of the record, I fill the votives with water as hot as I can without cracking the glass, with some washing up liquid in it. Leave it for about 10 minutes which softens the wax deposited on the glass surface then using a metal pan scourer gently but firmly remove the wax. It takes a couple of minutes, give it a rinse in warm clean water and make sure all the wax has gone. If not repeat the procedure and when you are sure the votive is clean give it a good polish with a soft cloth. Not rocket science I know but you do get more light from the tea light by doing this and if you don't have votive holders you can use shallow jars, they work just as well. Hope that explains it sensibly.

    :) Morning.

The Road is harrowing, but brilliant; expect to be very disquieted by it. For more unconventional post-SHTF, try David Brin's The Postman or James Lovegrove's Untied Kingdom.

There'll be loads more out there but I'm not properly tea'd up yet and can't call any to mind this minute.;)

If there were any factual books about post-Katrina New Orleans then I'd like to read them, does anybody know?

:) Hi Mar, there's some oral histories on this website http://www.uscg.mil/history/katrina/katrinaindex.asp but I haven't read any books about it. I can remember exactly where I was when it happened, tho; the Outer Hebrides.

I have read snippets about it on blogs from US and it seems that many of the outlying towns in the New Orleans area haven't been rebuilt and that a lot of people, the poorer people, have permanantly left the area.

I hadn't heard of this until today. Death rate is 3 out of 5. There are also cases in France.

This is how it starts in all the SHTF books!

Just been to the docs (wimmins problems ;)). A great doc not seen before and feel so much more reassured that we finally have a clue what's going on, that it doesn't look terminal and that HELP IS OUT THERE!
I can't go into detail as Bedsit Bob might be listening :rotfl:
But I expect to be a new woman any day soon. :T
Meanwhile got caught in the most atrocious hail storm on the way back. What is going on with the weather?
