The Dot Net & Dot Com Meaning

Options
Can somebody either explain or links me to a site that clearcly explains the differences between the following
(Unfortunately formatting not working properly)
.com,
.net,
.biz,
.org,
.TV,
.uk,
.me,
.info

Some are pretty obvious.
.com website endings usually tell you that the site is American.
.uk usually tells you that the site is British.
.org usually tells you that the website belongs to an organisation.
Or am I wrong?
And what about the rest?
I am sure there are other endings with others relating to own countries such as .eu (Europe) and .ru (Russia).

This will be interesting as I have my own website I'd love to place these meanings onto.

.biz was brought out as alternative for businesses where the .com was already in someone else's control

.net was originally intended for service providers but is now widely used as an alternative to .com. I have a .net as the .com was alreadt taken :(

.tv - I believe it was a country domain but they allowed others to buy it and the proceeds go towards the country

.me I think is designed for personal domains, bit like .name

.mobi is a new one that's only for xhtml (mp) sites

dont assume that a .com is american.

Anyone can register a .com name - if it is available
We all evolve - get on with it

Here's a list of web country codes which explains some of the other endings:

I always recomend to customers to never buy anything other than .com or .co.uk people usually asume your address will be one of those 2 and only remember the bit before. If you search with google for mse or moneysavingexpert it will come up with this site as number 1. try the same for a site with one of the others it will come up with the .com or .co.uk variant first. if the company is in the same line of work then the user may order from them.

Always have a unique domain that .com and .co.uk are available to ensure they find you.

I assume .com was intended for companies. As has been said it can be used anywhere but some Americans seem to think that it was intended just for them.

Don't Americans always think that way?

To be fair, the Internet was created by the US military, and has therefore grown out from the US, so I don't think it's the usual American arrogance. There is also a .us TLD interestingly, but it doesn't see a lot of use.

I was going to mention the .us. The .com is meant to be non-country specific, ie international, but as seaweasel says it's become "Americanised" because they invented it and the domain servers are located in New York. If you were to tie down as to the nearest country to actually owning the internet , then it would be the USA. It's not arrogance, just the way the internet developed.
