When is a claim not a claim?

Last year I notified home insurance company that a water main had burst outside. We were lucky and did not have to make a claim in the end. This year, I notified them of potential storm damage but have yet to make a claim. I now find out, when trying to renew this year, that these notifications are considered as claims and therefore my premiums have been elevated. I was just trying to do the right thing notifying when an incident happened ahead of making a formal claim - clearly the wrong thing to do?! Any advice welcome - and apologies if this has already been covered. thanks in advance. Damp.

Probably the wrong thing to do (though most policies do ask that all incidents/losses be reported that could lead to a claim)

As you have discovered you have not made "claims", but reported "incidents" which are added to your history, and your premium could well get a loading.

These incidents will be on the database, and will have to be disclosed to any other insurer you approach for quotes - usually they ask for your history over the previous 3/5 years.

Dont forget to mention these incidents. Future insurance policies may
use them as an excuse not to payout.
