Well this evening I went to see something a bit leftfield - a Proton Impian GSX. Absolutely gorgeous inside - leather, aircon, CD changer, but previous owner was clearly an idiot because it was just tatty, bits of broken trim, scratches all over. :( Somehow managed to scrape the bumper too despite it having PARKING SENSORS!

Anyway, might make a low offer but don't think the dealer would be interested...

    how deep is your pockets?

i would research this car dont be fooled into thinking its a lotus design, its not only suspension and handling parts are wich means expensive.

1.6 litre engine is lifeless, so youll have your foot planted down using fuel +poor MPG. inside trim is proven to fall to bits and scratch up at the slightest of contact so no rings on or keyrings on keys.

as its not so much a mainstream car, bit left field as you put it, you can expect to be lookimg at maindealer prices for the most tediouse of parts.

expect rust! rear subframe front subframe, boot well, inner rear arches. and skirts if it hasnt had a decent underseal laid on the bottom.

malaysian paint isnt the best either look at the front closely, bet youll be able to join dot to dot on the stone chips up and down the front end.

Hmm, ok. Test drove it and it didn't seem sluggish, seemed fine. Anyway I need to keep it not too fast for insurance. :D
  • youll be going from group 13 to group 19 insurance wise, with lower security than the rover.

there was someone on here not long ago going for the same make and model. up for £1400.

i would not be paying that for a 01-55 plate or below with any kind of mileage more around the £600(01) £995(05-55) mark then increment £100 for the years above. these cars spend alot of time on a fourcourt if the trader is daft enough to take one away from auction, most are part ex, and dressed up but sit for long periods untill sold on at auction.

    Only just read this somehow...

Anyway, I've now bought an Impian, one identical to the one I went to see but with 1 owner, 40k, FSH and hadn't been driven by an idiot i.e. isn't covered in scratches.
Not sure if this is a good idea or not really, paid £1250 with full MOT and tax till April. I took it in to get the wheels balanced and tracked but the steering wheel is STILL not straight and is vibrating above about 60mph. Garage are going to take another look but I can't get it in till next week due to work commitments.

And it needs a new middle and back exhaust. :( For which a parts place on the Proton forums wants £240, not even fitted, which is ridiculous. I paid £120 for that for the rover, fitted.

Had a quote of £84 for a used one, not sure if that's a good idea - I'm not paying £250+. Also wondering if its worth pursuing the seller as it was described as in excellent condition.

The Volkswagen '1Z' engine, despite being a 'TDI' engine, is not a ring gummer. It can be found in the Audi 80 and I believe some early A4s.
The reason being that it cheats - the piston crowns are concave, effectively acting as pre-combustion chambers.

I didn't find it upset the ECU on my old 80 either, athough I fitted a mechanical injector pump in the end, making the ECU redundant.

Peugeot XUD9 engines are good oil burners too (again, need a Bosch pump) as well as the bigger XUD11 that can be found in some heftily-specced 406's.

From luxobarge to small Proton, via black taxi. You're open minded if nothing else!

    :rotfl:

Simply couldn't insure the taxi, at my age anyway. And less of the small. :p Its at least 3 series size and has leather, amongst other things...

Any ideas about the vibration and exhaust? Think I may buy the used one at £84...

no way would i buy one @ 1250. i would have walked on the mileage, exhaust is a common trait of non usage sat to rust away.

welcome to the world of left field motoring. youve bought a car that no one stocks the parts for, so be ready to wait for parts on special order, try finding one in a scrappy! you be extremely lucky if they have on in a scrappy near you.

    used exhaust personally wouldnt bother.

could ask them but be prepared for them to say no
