Get involved in things. Don't just study and drink.

Bit vague. Depends what you mean. Academically then do something you enjoy and you're good at, keep up with the work! Otherwise, follow your interests or find new ones (societies, student union, radio, newspaper etc). Have fun, meet lots of new people, just don't get drunk and stoned too much. Also, while running for positions in your union or SRC is great fun, gives you a lot of useful experience and is good for your CV, bear in mind the danger to you degree, it can be very time consuming!

Go to all your lectures and tutorials and do some studying outside of classes. Make use of the resources available like the library, your Athens password and any material on the university intranet. If you have difficulty understanding something go and ask a lecturer but try and sound interested in the subject and as though you as though you are taking responsibility for your own studies, they like that. Be nice to postgrads and students in the year above you. Join a club or society or two. Don't take your laundry home to your mum or get her to bring you loads of frozen meals in tupperware containers. Swap recipes with international students. Talk to strangers, you're allowed when you are grown-up, that's how you make new friends.

I learnt the most by making friends with the international students in my halls. Not only do I now have an understanding of their culture but also free accomodation on holidays!

My dad always says that in the first year you party too much, in the second year you work too much and in the third year you get the balance about right. I think he is right as you learn to prioritise your work and balance work and social life.

Those are probably the most important things you can learn. You also make some of your closest friends at uni, so sit back and enjoy!
