Sometimes in life a person has to accept the things they cannot change.Taxpayers will always have to pay for the unemployed- which you could end up being yourself!0

But the OP and her family CAN change her situation.
When I was unemployed through redundancy - the Taxpayer (I had paid income tax prior to that awful time for 35 years) paid me very little and for a very short time.
The only benefit I received was a few months of contribution based JSA and that was it. I still had to pay full council tax and utility bills etc.
I could (and did) change my situation. I didn't go on forums asking what benefits I was entitled to - I got off my backside and looked for a job - which was difficult for someone who was the wrong side of 50.
My wife was also made redundant at the same time - she did the same and got another job.
It is all too easy on the UK's benefit system to live off the state and I have no issues whatsoever about genuine people who are seeking work or who cannot because of medical reasons, but we now have people who receive benefits as their chosen career and just don't have a reason to get out of bed on a morning.0 -

:T Why is it so difficult for politicians to make the differentiation between those in genuine need and perpetual claimants as you just have?0 -

If both you and your wife were made redundant and claiming benefits you should have received council tax benefit.0 -

Well thats you, but this is what some of this site is for. The O.P has done nothing wrong, she has asked a valid question. She and her partner may have been tax payers for years and even if they havent they have rights regarding making claims to money they are entitled to.0 -
I think peoples argument of the benefit system is outdated ....the thing that gets me is I have no children but all my taxes go on keeping other peoples kids with child tax credit and this is gonna have to stop....if you can not afford to keep you own children on your own wage.....DON'T HAVE ANY!!!
This is going off topic a bit, but I just wanted to say that situations can and do sometimes change.
When my three children were born, I was married and both of us worked. I gave up work after my third child was born - one of my children is severely disabled and has been from birth. When the youngest was five, my (now ex) husband decided to start a new family elsewhere. I had no option but to claim benefits. My son will be severely disabled for his entire life, and will always need caring for.
I don't like claiming benefits, but there is little or no childcare available for children with disabilities, especially when, at 14, they are doubly incontinent, have severe feeding problems, incoherent speech, breathing difficulties, mobility problems, learning difficulties......
I appreciate that I am not in the same situation as the OP, and most people will agree that the welfare state should support those who cannot work. However, your statement was very sweeping and does not allow for changes in circumstances.
OP, as you are not working, your partner should be able to seek work now. Is he claiming any benefits? If he is claiming JSA, he should be looking for work as a condition of receiving the benefit. If he isn't claiming JSA, is he claiming anything else?0 -
OP - have a look into Maternity Allowance along with other benefits. As long as you meet the criteria that will help you out a bit.Data protection is there for you, not for companies to hide behind0
