Anyone here ever got a ticket after being caught by Motorway speed cameras??

By speed cameras I mean those variable speed ones on motorway gantries to control speed during periods of high congestion i.e. as found on the M42, M6, M25 etc. (Not average speed cameras).

I drive around the Midlands a lot, and frequently see people going waaaaaay faster than the temporary speed limited posted on the electronic displays under the gantries with cameras. I know not every gantry has a camera, in fact it's pretty easy to see those which do, but people constantly fly past above the posted electronic variable limit. Anyone who knows what I'm on about knows the signs are above every lane of the motorway and very clear/bright so impossible to miss.

Therefore just wondering if anyone here has got a ticket/knows anyone who has?

Go onto pepipoo.com , on the speeding section and you will see lots of camers caught victims.

  • I know the ones you are referring to. I'm sure I've seen them flash vehicles on the other side of the motorway before but obviously don't know if they followed up with a speeding ticket.

A lot of gantry speed limits are "Advisory" not mandatory. There will be a warning if camera enforcement is in operation.

Most of the loons you see flying past advisories think they are for everyone else so they can make more progress!

If they're just a number (ie. the matrix signs on the central reservation), then they don't comply with the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) 2002, then they're advisory. It's still a good idea to obey it, although it can be very annoying to do so and then come to the "Ø" end sign and there hasn't been any reason for the speed restriction.

If they're a number in a red circle, then they comply with the TSRGD, and are mandatory.

However, if one bulb or LED isn't working, then they don't comply to the TSRGD and aren't mandatory. Some are linked to the camera system, so that, if the sign is faulty, the camera is disabled.

Definately the mandatory ones - very clearly posted speed limit above each lane in a red circle - i.e. looks like a speed limit sign. There are camera signs, as well as the individual cameras themselves above each lane which are easily visible. I presumed, being modern, that they did not use flash technology as I have never ever seen one go off.

But reason for asking was highlighted today - some numpty went flying up the hard shoulder running lane on the M6, must easily be going 90+ and cut across to the third lane sharply a few hundred metres later. He went under a gantry advertising a limit of 50mph (everyone else was doing that speed) and there were cameras on those ones.
