Strange Goings On....

Options
Hi, can anybody suggest anything to help with my desktop probs please.
1)
Hotmail a/c was hacked last week, rubbish email with the 'get rich quick' link was sent to all peeps in my contact list - 400+...
My account has now been unblocked and passwords changed but I don't know how this happened and if there is anything else I could/should be doing?

2)
This morning, within BBC webpage, I seem to have a mixture of old and new stories, for instance, one this morning dated back to June 2010! When I refresh the page, it appears as normal, with just the current stories.

3)
Last night my printer churned out 24 of 1395 printed sheets (when I had only requested one page be printed from a one page document), if the printer hadn't run out of paper it would have still been going!

I don't even know if these things are linked and/or if I haven't yet established the full extent of any other malicious nonsense. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone, what can I do, any suggestions? I am running Avast Security on this machine with two full scans scheduled each week, I download all security updates etc. I have run an additional full scan today but am told that machine is fully secure with no problems.

Cheers for any help, Tabs

    1) It happens, unlikely to be connected to infections on your machine, but you could do a malwarebytes scan to double check nothing has been missed. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

2). Make sure your browser is set to refresh pages automatically, and set to delete temporary files and history on exit. You could also install ccleaner and set it to run at boot to achieve something similar, and tidy up temp files.

3). No idea (was every page the same and what you expected?), but there is a new variant of a trojan going around that prints rubblish. http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/trojanmilicenso-paper-salesman-s-dream-come-true

All three are unlikely to be linked if no infections are found. You don't really need to do full scans with a resident AV, if it can detect anything, it will detect on access - more useful to do an on demand scan with malwarebytes or another 3rd party scanner instead http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/virusscanner/

    Post a hijackthis log.

Number 2 has happened to me on a tablet and a PC this morning - the tablet was on a city wifi point, the PC at home.

Thats not down to me, must be something up with the BBC site...

BBC is definitely the cause here - I also am getting old stories on their news page - eg Cameron child incident last month, etc

Me too, the BBC seems to be pushing stories from 11 June 2012.
No doubt they will notice eventually.
