eBay displaying average used sale price on listings

Just read http://tamebay.com/2012/07/ebay-display-average-used-sale-price-on-listings.html

Only seems to be for catalogue based listings but bad idea; let's hope it doesn't spread. :(

Saw it on one listing the other night - I refused to buy from the cheapest guy anyway because he had poor feedback.

The thing is, though, searching for a specific title - e.g. a DVD, etc. - brings up a relatively short list of items anyway. It's an average - which means they are letting you know a ballpark figure, not the actual cheapest cost - and anyway, I can usually quickly find the cheapest listing anyway, so it doesn't save me an awful lot of time.

From a buyer's POV it saves me maybe about 30 seconds.

As I only sell brand new items, it will make me look expensive - it's not clear at first glance that it's not a like-for-like comparison.

Also appears to be based on prices in the USA - and the figure as not been converted to UK currency.

This is as nuts as the BIN price having to be 40% above the start price. Who will pay 40% more - just to get it quicker?
  • ebay gets worse n worse, and they are a law unto themselves and will never admit to a mistake and remove it, this is worse than not being able to leave your buyer a neg. only an idiot must have thought of this.
  • The idea is pointless twaddle and the averages are incorrect (everything can't have an average in whole pounds) and misleading and possibly illegal.

Advertising average used price on listings for new products is pointless and potentially damages the seller's sales.

For new items or those in collectable condition it basically says, "Hey this item is £5 but the average is £3, are you stupid enough to buy it or stupid enough to search around in frustration trying to find this for £3 when it isn't available because we've hidden the fact the average is based on used items and haven't bothered to mention is a very rounded, approximate price "

This is a very bad idea, and not being accurate does not help. Hopefully this is not permanant!

They tend not to admit mistakes but they do occasionally go back, I rarely sell items everyone else does so it wouldn't make much difference to me, I don't really understand the point of it though.

I remember when i was looking at a jumper on Ebay , and adverts selling jumpers at OTHER websites popped up on the listing.

I couldn't believe it - directing traffic away from their own customers - just for the affilates fee.

Don't think they lasted long though, due to complaints.

Well eBay is now offering me vouchers on my own listings ("pay only £xx.xx - [show me how]" message). I guess this is actually a good thing if they are promoting one of my categories, but seems strange and alarming when you are looking at your own listings!
